I was sitting in traffic the other day and almost got side swiped by a truck. Made me think, if my car got totaled today, what would I but to replace it? I couldn't come up with a DD answer, I mean I know I want a 911 as my second car, but not as the primary.
So what say you GRM, what would you choose as your DD appliance.
Rules:
Must be able to seat 4 people, must be able to negotiate crappy roads, must be able to tow a pair of jet skis and do stuff normal family trucksters do..
Go.
Edit: Price range lets say less than $40K

BMW 740i with H&R OE Sport springs and Bilstein HD shocks. Maybe a Remus exhaust. Some modern head unit with sat-radio.
Almost sideswiped by a truck, you say?
I drive a variety of vehicles, but one thing I have noticed when I drive my old Chevy C-30 DRW is that the thing commands respect (or fear, whatever, same thing). People see that big ass truck coming down a piece of two-lane, with the rear tires tracking within inches of both the double yellow and the white stripe at the edge of the road, mirrors jutting out another two feet or so, and they get over. I mean, it's almost commonplace to have bozos drift over the center line whenever I'm driving anything else, but it never happens when I'm driving the truck.
So yeah. I'd recommend a big-ass old truck.
I would get a manual transmission Forester. Upgrade the bars and tweak suspension. Done.
Unimog
What? It meets the criteria.
06 CCSB GM. Since they're only ~$15k now in excellent condition, I'd get a 2wd, 2/4 lowered, fr/rr sway bars upgrade, supercharger, sound deadening and a better stereo. Then I'd have another $15k for a toy.
That's not a TRUCK, this is a TRUCK!
And it has anti-Earth battle paint to piss off the Prius drivers

Uhhh, duh, Grand Cherokee.
I have been contemplating an Accord coupe, Mazda 6, Ford Fusion or Scion TC for my next car. Theoretically, they would fit your needs too, although I don't know how well they'd work at towing jet skis. I have a beater truck for hauling, so that's not on the list of what I'd need a DD to do.
In reply to MadScientistMatt:
All listed will haul 2 jet skis, except maybe the Scion TC, not sure on that one.
This looks like a job for the P71!

+1 for this.
+2. The XT's can be tons of fun, I also really like the Ford Flex with the Ecoboost for some reason...
The Subaru lineup was the first thing I considered. 40k will get a lot of cars. Used Cayenne with a stick. Used X3 or X5 with a stick. Escape Hybrid. Used Phaeton W12. (How bad are the roads? Are they car bad, crossover bad, truck bad, or helicopter bad?)
Yeah, I'm all over the map.
Lezmobiles? P71's? Ford berkeleying Escape? If you guys ever find yourselves wondering "Why am I a berkeleying failure at life?" It is probably because you lack vision.
Or supercharged Sequoia if the roads are that crappy.

Um, not a unimog.
I think a M5 is where I would be looking.
Land Rover Range Rover or LR3
Take the rest of the money and pay for the gas.

:D Fine. Rally prepped Merc 450 SLC. Laforza with custom glass rims. 2013 MV-1 (with Roush bits, natch). G500. Pinzgauer. Jag X type. Land Rover FC101. Any AWD Porsche 911. The nicest BRAT you can find, and a Baja to tow it. Quattro Allroad. Vehicross. Hummbug. Fisker (and a fire extinguisher). Quigley conversion van. GTI R32.
What's a Rally Fighter going for, and how many seats does it have?
