Mr. Brown, tell me about your Jetta. PM if you'd like.

I am the second owner. I purchased it from the original owner when his kid balked at the purchase. All maintenance was performed through my dealership since it was delivered. It is a 1.8T with 5 speed automatic, the stronger of VWs automatics. Recent maintenance: Front and rear brakes, timing belt, tensioner, water pump, follower. It technically needs a set of tires, they make a small amount of noise when driving at lower speeds, you can see a little chopping in the tires from someone balancing them improperly. There is no vibration or shake and the car is quiet above 35mph. It gets about 30mpg when traveling 70-75mph. The car has 116K miles on it, there are two very small soft dents, one in the right front fender one on the hood both are so small you can not photograph them easily. Everything works well and the vehicle drives like new.

I really don't want to sell it but I need to clear out the payment. I really love everything about the MKIV GLI. In my next life I will find one with a six speed.

It really is a good looking car. How reliable are they?

If you keep up on maintenance the 2004/2005 MKIV Jettas are pretty stout. Timing belts every 80-90K Castrol Syntec and tire rotations every 5K miles and you are golden.

Dammit, well there's another car to add to my bucket list.

5 speed auto knocks it off the list; Mrs. 914 likes the stick.

So Dan, without the 4Runner around, what is going to assume towing duties?

If you want a fast, nice, great to drive 4 door, pick up an E36 M3 sedan. I still regret selling mine, best all around car I have ever owned/driven/sat in.

There's a full sized pickuup in my future. The Ranger may go to my kid.

Any thoughts on a Mazda 3 or Lancer?

Quote of the month?

I second the E36M3 or perhaps an E46 330i which is 99% as capable with probably fewer problems and lower insurance (no M tax).

on both cases it seems smarter to just jump to the ms3 or evo. youre gonna want to tune the hell out of the lower end version anyway, just buy it with boost built in

540i 6-Speed. Fast, looks great, comfortable, and decent on gas considering the performance

No SAABs after 1992.

Audi A3s caught my eye, insights?
