I have a coworkewr that is selling a red '92 MX-6 V6 for $500. It runs and drives well, needs some bodywork. He said the drivers side doorpanel keeps falling off as the clips that hold it on are broke (assume a replacement as worst). What is the general thoughts of these cars? Would it be a decent commuter car for my 50 mile drive eachway to work on friday, sat and sundays?

Drives very much like Probe because it is very much like a Probe, except a little softer, which is nice for that 50-mile commute. Decent cars with decent longevity. If it's solid, $500 doesn't sound bad.

I like the looks of them. Nothing helpful to add other than that.

I'm assuming you're looking at a 2nd gen car (bulbous with the huge trunk), not a first gen (boxy) with a v6 swap. If so, they are pretty nice cars to be in on a day to day basis.

The engines are fairly powerful and smooth. Lots to be gained there too by swapping / porting the intake manifold. Mileage isn't fantastic, but it's no worse than other cars of that class and era. Chassis is very simple to work on, and suspension is a very simple mac strut / chapman strut layout with, surprisingly, a fair bit of travel. LS trim cars come with adequately sized brakes too, which is nice.

The interior is pretty decent too aside from the very thin, rather flimsy-feeling doors. A bit of soundproofing material on the door interiors will fix that relatively easily. Other than that though, the leather clad MX6's are pretty nice to be in. Surprisingly practical for a 2 door sporty coupe too - as you've probably already seen from the massive trunk.

Common problems include oil in the spark plug wells, an e-brake that sometimes sticks when it's cold, and trunk dampers that aren't strong enough to hold the trunk lid up. The first two can be addressed relatively easily by replacing the valve cover gaskets and an occasional cleaning / regreasing of the rear brake calipers, respectively. I've seen some various solutions for that last one, from using a dowel to prop up the trunk to installing a pair of modified trunk struts off of a Ford Taurus.

Overall, they're great cars for the money. If it runs well and it isn't too beat up, I'd go for it.

I had a Probe of that era for a little while in college. Pretty solid car. Nothing special in my opinion.
