To DirtyBird, I see why you're disappointed I ran that scca pdx at Daytona and won't do it again, if it was the 24hrs course I'd be there! HPDE is fun if you're passing cars that should be faster than you, it kinda sucks if you're just pointing people by. I'll say this though, if you wanna go wheel to wheel racing Miata truly is the answer!!

They typically run TT during the same HPDE so you can just grab a rental transponder at most NASA events. They have been the least uptight bunch I've run across when it comes to quantifying speed. Probably due to the fact that they are openly a feeder program to their own racing... whereas BMW purports to be a performance driving school and wads up their panties and covers their insurance agent's ears if you call it racing school out loud.

RaceChrono for Android works really, really well, if you'd like to just run your own instrumentation.. Amazingly simple to use, very visible (if you have a windshield mount), so it makes a quite effective race timer. I've seen it tested against transponders and it's +- 1 second, but consistent to itself. Good enough to use.

NASA Norcal group 3 & 4 allow timing, but like others said, the TT group is the way to go. Speedventures out here let everyone but absolute newbs run transponders at Buttonwillow. I guess NASA is more uptight elsewhere.

agree … but you can't just jump into TT … with NASA you have to "prove" your level of expertise, get a check ride and then be issued a provisional license …. SCCA is much worse

it's out there, but not as simple as signing up and running in timed sessions

btw TT is what I run now

I had a AWD car, Subaru WRX, now I have a Mustang GT. RWD is way more fun than any other configuration.
