Dirt Late Model. Many $20,000 to $100,000 to win races. 100 laps long, No pit stops (Only needing Three crew members max) and you can race almost 5 nights a week too. Also, the rules are somewhat more liberal than most stock car series i.e. What the teams can do to a rear suspenison with a solid axle is amazing!

Kids pinewood derby racing.

Likely winnings =0 But the most you can lose is about $20.
I see that as the most profitable (or least unprofitable) racing out there

Building several lemons cars and renting out seats arrive and drive style. Make sure the cars are reliable enough to last the whole weekend and have a backup car so if one blows up the guys that paid money get to run laps still. Other than that you aren't going to break even without partnership $$$ coming in.

"How do you make a small fortune in racing? Start with a large one." Unless you get big time sponsorship that uses road racing as an advertising expense, or run several cars for arrive and drive programs and build/maintain cars in a shop, there really isn't money to be made by just being a driver/owner. Even some F1 drivers are pay drivers and that isn't working out for those teams right now.

Oval racing may be a bit different as several drivers make a living off of it or at least pay for their equipment with earnings. BUT the ones that do that seem to live on the road hitting as many tracks as they can a week.

The only way racing and profitable are in the same sentence is if you are successful and at a pretty high level or if you are an arrive and drive company.

Really if I was looking at a career in motorsports and I wanted to be a boss, it would be owning an arrive and drive company. I would look at GT3 cup or Ferrari Challenge and market the heck out of high end gentlemen drivers.

Racing is what happens when companies have very large piles of cash that they need to disappear. So first start a business where you make so much daggum money that you need to convert some of it into noise and smoke.

Move to China near Shenzen or Guangzhou and if you can get a few super new rich to like you you can run an entire series for them and they will pay you comfortably.

  • Speed and power are more important than good racing. They don't want Spec Miata they want 800hp LS powered composite bodied mini Audi R10s
  • Hire an instructor/coach with a British or Australian accent. The accent is more important than his, yes only men allowed, driving knowledge.
  • Be ready for your Friends to instantly change the whole thing on you. Like you finish preparing 6 of your mini prototypes. And they send you an email that 10 2016, yes the year is correct, Porsche cup cars will arrive tomorrow. But as the truck arrives 10 LaFerraris are offloaded.

Profitable, fun, fleeting, dangerous.
