What is the "ultimate" snow traversing build?

I mentioned my lifted XJ but saw air cooled VW Beetles mentioned.

My '73 was crazy-good in deep snow. Skinny tires and weight on them? Really good!

The ultimate snow-traversing vehicle is a 4x4 with a lockable/diffless transfer case and (selectable) lockers on both axles, running on either massive balloon tires (like 44" or more) at low pressure mounted with beadlockers and maybe covered with chains, or Mattracks. Which one...I think you'd have to test them back-to-back to see which is better. The Mattracks would give you more traction on flat snow but the big balloon tires will give better obstacle clearing capability.

i guess a slightly more modern example of this would be an aw11 mr2. I daily drove mine for over 4 years with summer tires and never had an issue with snow up to ~6" but only since it was lowered, it could have probably done deeper snow on stock suspension. with the weight on the tires and 185's it would handle it with ease

I remember the day i took this picture specifically because it was one of the first times driving it in deeper snow after lowering it and going down the road the front bumper would catch snow and kick it up over the car, made for some good laughs

And as long as the map of your area looks like a perfect grid (no turns), you're set.
