So I recently acquired a 71 corvette in a trade. the car is numbers matching and mostly all there, the original ignition has been lost, the ac has some pieces missing, and there are a couple of aftermarket do dads on the motor. The chassis is 100 solid and there is no rust on any thing, the car has never been wrecked but the paint is so so. it was originally war bonnet yellow but was sprayed red in the late 70's. it looks great from 20 feet away though. it is a 350 automatic car, nothing extreemly rare or valuable
so now you know a little bit about the car I'm wondering what I should do with it. I have been building high end cars professionally for quite some time so naturally I want to do something with it
should I.....
make it a track day car? my concern is dumping a ton of my time and money into the car and not being able to get over $15,000 for it if I were to sell it.
or should I give it a minor resto and sell it for something else like a 911
I really want a track day car that is street legal
I would love to put l88 flares on it and redo the body then cage it and get the suspension sorted out, with a mild small block (400hp)
I have been building Porsche's for a long time and love them so a good part of me wants to sell the vette and buy a 911 but the market sucks right now so I don't know how fast I can get rid of a vette right now.
I also have a 05 mustang GT....... maybe I should just build that up and forget the whole thing
Not sure if a slushbox C3 makes a good track car?
I'd give it some minor resto, possibly some paint if you can raise the value enough with new paint and then sell it to fund something that's more suited to track use. The rust free chassis is a big plus and I'm sure someone who's after a C3 will be happy to pay a little more for that.
I don't think the 911 market is that healthy either, so a decently running C3 might well give you enough money to buy a pretty good SC or Carrera 3.2.
Hrrmmm you like porsche, but have vette...What should you do?
I doubt he'll find an LSx in the C3 if it's a numbers matching car. And if he does, it might better if he kept the engine in there .

I have a m22 munchie 4 speed I would use with the car if I were to modify it

914-6 has also crossed my mind, what ever I do its going to be semi period correct with in reason

Well my post was all about the moral of the story, but I agree with you when you get down too it
Would you try to do a period correct modded 'vette or more the 'whatever it needs to fly' kind?
LS1/T56 swap, L88 flares, cage, track suspension.
my opinion is FIRST to clean the car top to bottom, inside and out.
During the cleaning process you will have time to think about what you want to do and youll see all the odds and ends that the car will need.
After youre done, if you decide to keep it, great you have a clean start. If you decide you dont wanna keep it then you already have a clean prepped car that you can now sell easily.
You can thank me later...

when I say "period correct" I mean more looks wise then any thing. I would build the vette with mostly guldstrand suspension parts, do the chassis reinforcements that are common for these cars, flare it, put in fixed head lights, roll bar, m22 4 speed, mild small block. I'm not sure what I would do for brakes and rolling stock. I would do the body work to make it pretty.
If I did a 911 I would build an rs look a like, and as far as every thing else it would depend on the car I found.
I have done a few correct RSR clones and many 911 track car builds and full restorations. so I do know what I'm doing with a 911... more so than a vette

carkid you are very right! that will be done, for now bench racing is fun
Can we see pictures of some of these 911 RSR clones you've built?
And/or pictures of the 'Vette?

this is me hand forming 911 ST rear flares
Dayumn. Man's got two count 'em TWO English wheels. Looks like he knows how to use 'em too.
On the 'Vette: that era has a rear suspension design that's better than the really horrid late '60's stuff but is still marginal at best for real high speed stuff. I'd do like CarKid says, clean it up nice, fix the ignition and small stuff and put it up for sale. Use the $ to build something a bit more track worthy.
That's my favorite Vette body style...yet I still want to stuff the AWD system from a Typhoon under one.
Trade it for a nice black Cavalier. I know where you can find one
I like where you are going with the body work. This is one we restored at an old job and I have wanted one like it ever since

that's at a shop in mass where I got some of my training... since then i've moved to Atlanta and am trying to get some shop space together so i can be hitting track days at road Atlanta this summer so if any one has any leads for space in ATL area let me know!
I think I need to try an sell this vette every one i know has been talking me out of trying to get some real performance out of it.
Now im trying to think of what would be in the same price range of a c3 if i dont go with a 911
