Dare I say, I'm a bit more impressed with this young gent I know of from Maine. He's swapping an H6 into his OBS on a shoestring budget in his driveway, all the while posting three trillion relevant, informative videos of the process on YouTube.

Yeah I dunno who pissed in Alfa's Cheerios, but I think the V10 swapped Impreza is impressive. Sounds good, looks like it handles pretty well.

Agreed. If it were a cone event, maybe there'd be more love here. Take that car off the asphalt... that'd be awesome rally cross. While I'm no big drift fan, that was some pretty darn good car control... and who knows if he doesn't track day it. And money.. who cares, it's his nickel. It's not racing. We get it. But when you sit there and bemoan it to be an utter waste of money you sound like an elitist grumbling old man pining for the "good ol' days" of bias-ply tires, strombergs, and leather helmets.

At least these guys are keeping motorsports alive in the eyes of the American public. They're getting kids interested in cars... in engines... in modification and fabrication and suspension and not just driving a goddamn Camry until teleportation technology frees them from the chore of driving.. They're demanding manual transmissions and rear wheel drive and keeping manufacturers interested in continuing to make such things.

Which is a lot more than any crotchety old men are doing for motorsport. {/soapbox.}

Challenge cars are awesome, I get it. It's also the price range I can play in, which helps me appreciate it. It doesn't mean I hate on because they cost more than 2k.

I mean, some of you sound like the guy who bitches at auto-x when someone shows up in a nice car and then doesn't run FTD. You know the type.... "Oh, that poseur in the Elise, someone in a Civic beat him, he's a "...just because he has a nice car??!?!

Tom and I went to the Formula Drift event here at Palm Beach International Raceway. I can't speak for Tom, but I went in with a poo poo attitude and game away impressed for following reasons:

A) The cars are actually well engineered -- including plenty of the same hardware found on your road race or autocross car.

B) I was surprised to find that the cars are actually set up to hook. Traction is then overcome with power (and e-brake). The cars need to bite and power out of the drift to be competitive.

C) They offer ride-A-long sessions, which is all kinds of fun. It's like a video loop segment of that one "Oh E36 M3" moment at the road course.

D) Formula Drift runs a very tight show. The pre-race driver's meeting is a surprisingly serious affair.

E) I was shocked to learn that scoring involves WAY more than just style.

F) For some reason, there were A LOT of attractive women roaming around. And not just booth babes. The hotties were everywhere.

I'm not telling you to run out and sell your autocross or road race machine. I'm only suggesting that you and your family CAN have a fun time spectating at a Formula Drift event. /Steevo

I share a garage with a fully built "Sil-forty" set up for drift. Heim joints, custom control arms, good brake setup, cage, blah blah blah.

If he were to take it to a "normal" track day or autox, it would give a LOT of hardware FITS. Very serious car.

You can't keep speed or control with one of these cars if they aren't set up to hook. This car actually runs Star Specs up front.
