I can smell the interior just by looking at the picture of the seats. Ugh.

There's an 85 running and driving on Chicago cl right now for 1900.

And a project like that for $1000 that has been listed for months.

Only one I saw (besides the $1000 needs a starter because the fuel injection died (???) was $2900.  Not counting half a dozen E-types for some reason.

The fact that the seller is putting the LSx swap on the list tells me that the engine has issues.

Bring a gas mask, that interior looks to be mostly made of mold now

The fact that a swap is suggested tells me the current owner has no real mechanical knowledge.

I think I'd want my XJS in straight six and manual trans flavor anyway. Save the LS for a better chassis.

He obviously can't count to 12

$900 for this and supposedly 37k original miles. I wonder how you could get it running?

This for $1350 with an LT1 and trans. Easy 190 horse power.

In reply to Antihero : I’m going to shock most people on this board.  The Jaguar V12 may not be the best car for the challenge.

It’s too heavy and too big to be fast on either the autocross or drag racing.

While some weight can come out of it, on an autocross budget you will be hard pressed to get weight under 3,000 pounds, frankly I doubt it can happen.

But you still have a big luxury car from the late 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s when cars were not powerful or simple.

Big means you have further to drive around cones than a small car like a MG or Sprite.

Further to drive adds time in a contest where time is critical.  There is no place where the potential power can overcome the further distance it has to travel

I'm not understanding the budget thing. Removing weight is generally free or low cost.  Looks like they're around 3700 lbs stock.  I've removed 1000 lbs from my Q45 and have more that could come off. I'm sure I could get an XJS under 3000lbs.

In reply to Stampie : 3700 pounds is only true up to about 1977 after that they got heavier every year until about 1981 when they settled on 4200 pounds.  XJ12’s were similar but got up to 4600 pounds once the shorter chassis was discontinued.

I’ve never worked with a  XJ12 but for the XJS  once you remove the interior, undercoating, bumpers,  HVAC, excess wiring etc.  getting weight under 3000 pounds for  post 1981 XJS  with a rollcage/ bar  gets extremely hard without spending money.   Lexan (or polycarbonate) is lighter than glass but more expensive than leaving glass in place.

Hood, trunklid, doors, fenders, can all be lightened, at costs.  Brake calipers can be switched from Iron to Aluminum at a cost.

I paid $500 for mine, selling off $250. Would leave $1769 left for power adders and weight reduction.

Since molds don’t count I’d go to lighter body parts with about $600, $400 for wheels, and power adders for $769

In theory 2700 pounds is possible with a rollcage  and reasonably complete appearance. 2300 pounds only with the most brutal and intensive weight reduction, more of a “modified” appearance than a production car.
