That other thread got me thinking.

The question is simple. What would you do with one? If it involves motorsport, would it be competitive?

I DD mine and autocrossed it several years back in STX locally. I usually trophied locally with very few mods, and it wins at DD every day

This is what I did with mine. Simple, and a good cruiser:

I'd probably sell it.

I DD a '05 5-speed in good weather. Current mods are CAI w/ tune, axle-back Flowmasters, Hurst shifter and strut tower brace. Love it but I want moar even for the street.

Not an auto-crosser at heart but seriously looking at track-cross at PittRace. Not ready to build this as a track only car.

Tentatively planning on suspension upgrades in the spring: Steeda sport 1" drop springs, Tokico D-Specs, tubular control arms, panhard bar etc. to keep it streetable. Cat-back exhaust, throttle body, not going internal on the engine tho. If I end up w/ a conservative 300 RWHP I'd be pleased... there's a limit tho...

Also eyeing '11-'12 Coyotes... 412HP is a damn good starting point.

Was just gonna say that. I love the '05-'09 body style vs later model, add Coyote FTW.

Usually refers to Ford's 4.6-liter Modular-series V8. Pre-Coyote.

'Pre-Coyote' makes the 4.6 sound adolescent.

They are a damn fun car that is very easy to work on. A lot of them are autocrossed and road raced.

Ah, then I'd definitely do Spec Mustang with it.

IF I were blessed with an early S197 I would likely apply the following bad ideas:
- 4.6L Aviator/Mountaineer block
- Forged 4V rotating assembly (Pistons, Rods, Crank)
- "Terminator" Cams and intake from 03 Cobra
- Big Kenne Bell supercharger
- 3" full(ish) length exhaust
- Lightened Flywheel BIG Clutch
- Modified Viper spec transmission
- 4:10 gearset
- Chassis seam welded, reinforced
- Big ass brakes wrapped by BBS wheels:

- Kids strapped in in the back, Honey in the passenger seat and Big Daddy with the Red Haze in his eye ;)

I've been largely out of the mod motor game for a while, but how on Earth are people getting 400 inches out of one?

If I got one, I would drive it. A lot. Probably to work every day.

As far as I can tell, like the Miata, it's competitive where it runs right out of the box.

But, for sure, I would spend more time driving it than modifying it. That's why you would buy it in the first place.

Prep it for ESP with safety for TT and Hillclimb racing. Start with suspension, brakes, seats and wheels/tires, leaving the engine stock until I felt the hp compared to a Coyote 5.0 was holding me back (this would probably take years...).

Sorry for the boring answer, but if you handed me a mod-motor S197 and told me to make a magazine car out of it, that's what I would do. I have no ego when it comes to driving, so I know 305hp is more than enough to kill me.

I think they are pretty descent cars out of the box.
