I think I know the answer to the last one, not sure about the first two. Feel free to post your own.

Conventional wisdom says there is no cheap Porsche. Conventional wisdom is not always right, but often is.

I've bought a couple of cheap Porsche 944's, I've spent a lot of money on both getting them to be reliable. You'd be better buying a nice one to start with, it's money ahead. That said, the first car looks OK in pictures. I'd definitely take a look.

One issue with a cheap 944 is not only catching up on the timing belt / water pump / seals, etc., it's everything else that's going to need replacing that's been ignored in addition to the front of the motor.

I want a Boxster / Cayman pretty badly, but I just can't get myself to pull the trigger. I've looked at a few nice examples that I can easily afford, but the potential bills and time it would take to keep it nice keep me from getting one. I absolutely love the way they drive however.

That 928 looks especially "not cheap". Like a world of pain.

Run from that 928. Just opening that link took $700 from my bank account.

This needs to go in the quotes section!

I like how the 928 ad writer said it "needs tlc". I normally associate that with a really serious detailing job to bring the paint back a bit and clean the interior and such. Maybe a comprehensive tune-up. Instead, in the pictures he's shared, I wondered how many pigs were living in it and for how long to get it to look like that.

p.s. I still love Porsche phone dial wheels and actually started looking for what 16" go for + adapters to mount a set on my SX4. Might be worth buying the 928 just to part out and save the wheels?

Agreed - the 928 is part-out material. Maybe as a raw base for a Challenge car. Maybe. Same for the 924. The 944 is right at that "scary-cheap-Porsche" price range... could be a nice car for OK money... could be your worst nightmare. Personally, I think I'd rather buy a $2000 car knowing it needs work, than a $4500 car that deludes me into thinking it's ready to go.

That is amusing right? Delusions?

It looks like a money pit to me. Any car with an interior that beat AND not being extremely common would make this a challenge to return anything close to your investment.

If it was an SN95 Mustang and you liked shopping for gently used items and doing your own work and such, maybe? But these cars are not simple like most Mustangs. But I've never worked on a Porsche; I'd ask Woody since he did that 911 resto not that long ago and seemed to have ways of sourcing parts that might make this viable.

EDIT: I just saw the rusted through rear quarter panel. Good lord I'd run like the wind.

at one time I might have said a Beetle, or Karmann Ghia... but these days many water cooled Porsches are cheaper then a decent Beetle of Ghia......

The first one is the least expensive in the long run. It actually looks like a nice car. If it has records it is a decent deal.

The 928 is a parts car. About the only thing it has going for it is it is a manual. If you had the time you could part it out and make a little $$$$. I don't know what the demand is for the older 928 stuff is these days.

The 924 is.. well a 924. Nothing special. Restore it for the fun of it but at the end of the day you have a 924. Fun but you will be in to it for 3x what you can sell it for.

The second listing made me spit my gum out after I read, "clutch is sharp. You can chirp the dry rotted tires easily." Good stuff. The first listing seems legit?
