Waitaminnit.

Someone now would actually pay '92k for a 928?! They always seem to have next to no residual value these days. What's the story w/ that one--does it have 10 miles on the odo?!

I don't know if you would consider it an exotic, but maybe a Skyline GTR.

What about a Boxster S? Fast enough, mid engine, reliable, real heat & A/C, and lots of fun to drive. You won't impress your neighbors, though..

I buy and sell 'bargain exotics' for a living, and I've had a number of 308/328 Ferraris. I was very excited when I bought the first one, a black 1987 328...but thoroughly underwhelmed when I drove it. The driving position sucked (I'm 5'10), the shifter was balky and hated going into third. By today's standards the car was slow, people at gas stations seemed to always ask if it was a Fiero kit car, and the biggest let down was the realization that "hand built" is just a poor excuse for ca.1974 Fiat build quality.

I vote Porsche, NSX or C5 if you want to enjoy driving it more than looking at it or bragging about it.

I was one of those kids with a Lambo Countach poster or 3 on the wall for the duration of my childhood. A few years ago I'm driving to work and what do you know - a Countach is sitting in the local Lexus dealer's used car lot. I, of course, stop to oogle it.

The lust was broken. While for 20 yards it still captured the imagination of the 12 year old boy inside me, as I got closer I couldn't help but notice the poor panel fit, the cooked lighting, etc. Then I peered into the interior. The fit and finish was worse than most kit cars. Heartbroken, I walked away.

I still want a Ferrari 308, but it will only be a starting point. Ergonomics would be fixed, the E36 M3ty 70's italian-ness would be wrung out like a spounge wherever possible, and the drivetrain would be a late model mainstream EFI mill. Transvers LSx if I'm feeling the need for a rumble, but more likely a turbocharged Honda K24.

I'm thinking that next year, when I get bored with the Daewoo, I'm going to make my own exotic. Picture a front engine, rwd Kia Pride (Fiesta) with a 4.6L Genesis V8 and the transaxle/rear suspension out of a 944. Something like that would probably get more looks than a 328. Granted, a greater percentage of said looks would probably be confusion/pity, but we all have to make sacrifices.

In reply to 96DXCivic: my reply to this comment is .the nsx although it is a Honda was the only road car in the world that Ayrton Senna played an integral part in it's development...

Having said that I'd pick the NSX... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vb3-Ibbf5HE

SENNA LIVES!!! in every nsx ... three time F1world champion! is that scary enough?and exotic enough?

I think that is an insult to the Fiero, which to me look a lot better than that Lotus!

As for the question of what exotic to buy, if you ask it, you have already given up on it being reliable or affordable.

I'd go for the NSX as well (and I've owned exactly one Japanese car in the last 42 years). I think you'd have to drive one to appreciate it.
