No idea about this. Helping girlfriend look at a car. Nice Mazda 3 with skyactive. Is this like a turbo or something that will break in a few years.

Nope, skyactiv is a holistic approach to efficiency that involves high compression NA gas engines, high efficiency transmissions, and lighter, stiffer structures. It makes the car more economical and more fun to drive.
Skyactive is a conglomeration of a few technologies and a process more than an actual part.
Basically it's direct injection high compression and lightness. No reason it should be less reliable than anything else.
Direct injection, 13:1 cr with short piston skirts to reduce friction, chain driven dual cams with vvt, and thinner bearings to cut down internal friction. an economy engine thats not supposed to feel like one.
Sadly no. The 2 we got still does a respectable 33MPG or so, but the Skyactiv 2 isn't sold in North America yet - and rumors say it might not ever be. I hope it eventually gets here, sharp little car.
There's always Carmax with the maxcare warranty if warranty coverage is what you're after.
It's a fun little car. I am getting 36-38mpg highway real world though. Heavy traffic 65-75mph(drafting?), usually a good 15-20min sitting and/or creeping along through the HRBT once a day on my 100mi round trip commute. At sea level helps too. I got 28-30mpg all city stop and go short trips when I lived near Dayton, OH and had a 5mi round trip commute.
Back on topic Skyactiv is great, high efficiency and great MPG without worrying about a hybrid battery dying. I'll be heavily considering a Skyactiv 3 if I'm still commuting so far a year or two from now.
Yea, this Mazda 3 hatch I Grand Touring Hatch Skyactiv might be the choice. Do you guys think it's a bigger car? She drives a lot for work and need some space in the back for band equipment. Honda fit was the natural choice, but this Mazda 3 is really really clean and that MPG is insane. Just worried it might be too big for her needs. It sort of looks like a wagon, but maybe I'm being a dumbass.
It's not a massive car by any means. I went from a 3 sedan(09 body style) to my 2. The 3 was a bit easier for me to know where it was, I think because the 2 has higher doors than my 09 3 sedan had? The hatch version shouldn't be much different, and the 2010+ was basically the same old car underneath until the Skyactiv drivetrains was put in.
If she can't drive a 3 she probably shouldn't drive at all
My wife has a 2012 automatic Skyactiv hatch. It's a nice size to haul some stuff if needed but easily parallel park in the city, etc. We get like 30-35 MPG, but almost all short trip city driving with lots of lights. At least 40 on the highway. No issues in 30k miles, did a few track days with it too. No rust after 3 salty winters, but I sprayed the under body with fluid film last year. I kinda wanted a DSG GTI, but the great mileage and lack of issues has affirmed our decision. I recommend them to friends a lot, and then they buy overpriced rusty Subarus because they "need AWD in Milwaukee" and bitch when it costs a lot to get head gaskets done.
Yea, this mazda 3 is the choice then. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow morning. After looking around online it's underpriced too and is super super clean, carfax report is exactly what i look for too. I'm really OCD and spot dirty cars which were cleaned up a mile away and had no complaints about this one.

Holistic?
lol. no.
The 3 hatch can haul a lot of stuff with the rear seats down. Examples: a dishwasher, 14 copy paper boxes, a bicycle with the front wheel off, 2 32 gallon garbage cans. Not at the same time.
Nice. Sounds like a solid car. That MPG is sort of blowing my mind, did not know that was possible out of a car like that.
Am I the only one who read the subject line for this thread and heard Jerry Seinfeld's voice asking the question?

Wait, so the 2 gets the same mileage as our 6? Now THAT'S funny!
The new 2 is apparently not going to be sold in hatchback or Mazda form....but the new Scion iA that is coming out in a month or so is just a 2 with Scion badges and an uuuuugggly catfish-looking grille. Supposed to be a fantastic little car.

Well considering the 2 was an afterthought that was brought here like 5 years after the rest of the world got the newer version, with a 15+ year old engine(just updated with VVT basically) its not really unusual.
No direct injection, no high compression Skyactiv sorcery, etc.
Plus its really meant as a city car, no doubt on the highway a 3 or 6 is better due to better aero especially.
Keep in mind the only 2 we got in the US was nearly a half-decade old when it was first put on sale here, while the significantly improved Skyactiv 3 and 6 were released shortly after. It never stood a chance to begin with, which is why it's kind of stupid that Mazda is using its poor sales to justify not bringing the new Skyactiv one here.
I'm not interested in the Scion iA in the slightest, but I'm actually somewhat captivated by the iM.
EDIT: Just barely beat to the punch!
