I don't think anything aside from the appliance engine, which is fine for an appliance.

Ooops!  I discovered iM has a CVT.

The swelling has evaporated.

Super high ratings on a Kia Sorento

A Soul isn't looking bad either.

May have to take a drive to find a Mazda3

The drive for the Mazda would be worth it to me over the other choices.

iM just has a really boring powertrain. Decent otherwise.

Is this for you or Mom?

If it’s for Mom, what’s wrong with the CVT?  She’s just going to drive it and it’s not like they are unreliable compared to others with CVTs (the Prius and most of their Hybrids have CVTs and they aren’t exactly unreliable).

In reply to Stefan :

A standard CVT functions nothing like a Toyota hybrid cvt. Hybrids use two planetary gear sets and two motors in unison with the engine. Together, they are able to creat varied gearing.  Standard cvt's use a steel belt and some pullys. The reliability is not interchangable. But then again, it is Toyota.

At first I thought for you and I was like heck yea order that thing with a 6 speed. Then I realized appliance and I was sad

I did forget to mention that they are horribly slow. Another 30hp would go a loooong way in those (drove one yesterday)

We drove a 2016 iM.  Even as an appliance it was awful.  Thrashy but underpowered, not particularly nice inside, not particularly roomy either.

Styling is 100% subjective, but Toyota is a nightmare wasteland lately IMHO.

We drove it back-to-back with a similar 5-door 2016 Cruze and the Cruze was a substantially nicer car in every way, for less money.

This is off topic but every time i see a new Camry i almost do a double take. They look fantastic in the model with the sportier front fascia. While i agree the current Corolla and iM are seriously underpar efforts, i dont think all of Toyota is doing particularly bad right now.

Bleccch. Like I said, it’s 100% subjective, but that thing is hideous. This is also off topic, so I won’t drag it further.

Found a '15 Scion xB that is certified and may go back tomorrow and buy that. We tried to hard haggle them since it was the last day of the month but did not get as far as I had hoped. Mom didn't bring her check book so we went home.

Mom was able to get the seat adjusted to fit her well and was able to get in and out of it without mussing her hair.

She did well on the road test and was able to stick it dead center in a parking space on the first try no coaching.

Zero!!! complaints on carcomplaints.com!

The only bad thing is the color Black

I like the xB. I wish we got more of them in on trade but we never seem to.

A Gen2 xB makes for a very good appliance. 2.4L Camry engine. Easy entry doors and seat height.

Mpg is not all that good. The big, box shape is not aerodynamic.

^ This. I think they're very, very good normal cars.

As usual, i will add that that's all fine and dandy except that the Prius also exists and is far better at some things and not much worse at anything.

Yeah, especially when you consider that between the terrible aero and the stone-age powertrain in the xB the Prius is probably going to get double the MPG.

The Mazda/Scion iM is essentially a corolla wagon in Japan. Which you'd expect great things as the Corolla is one of those hidden gem kinda cars which is reliable, low key, and fun to drive. Well all that changed with the last major body change. The car became boring and disconnected. The Toyota way! They claim they are trying to build "fun" cars again, but I work in the Camry plant. I loved the older Corollas. And the fun to drive Toyota's died with Scion.

There's an xB in mom's garage now. Thanks for the comments.

Other than the styling, it's a good pick. The first gen xb's were my favoritte. Had one, loved it, regret getting rid of it. Was hoping to find a cheap one when I was looking for a daily driver to spare my mx5 winter duty, but the ones still in good shape are still holding a decent value.

I actually meet a lot of great people because of Scion and more importantly the xb1. I did own a 2nd gen (2011) xb2 for a few years but it never did capture that xb1 feel. For what it is, the xb2 is a good car. It did grow a little to much in my opinion but it also allowed me to move with out needing to use a truck except to haul my bed from Cincnnati to Lexington KY with ease. Tons of functionality with good gas mileage, and a good ride. I would suggest if she uses the USB/AUX connection more than just rarely, to move it's location. It's in the center consol arm rest, you can relocate it next to the shifter by simply removing the filler cap and moving the wires from under the center console and routing them up to the shifter area. Took me about 30-40 minutes to do as I had no how-to or idea if it'd even work.
