Since the wife is not-not pregnant...You'll be sleeping on the couch for the first three and last three months. The middle three months will be a time of hormones. That's a good and bad thing depending on the pregnancy. wink I've got two kids and like putting on a play, each run through was different.

Practically speaking the four-door is going to be a much better kid taxi. Two doors suck diddly uck for baby seat manipulations. That wouldn't have been an issue for me since once my wife was pregnant safety and crash ratings were king in regards to what cars the kids could ride in. I'm not complaining as it pushed my car hobby into newer models. Newer cars being the perfect transition for new Dads as you'll be amazed how little time you have left for the car hobby with a new baby in the house. Low maintenance is king and will remain so until the kid(s) turn 6 or so.

If you keep the two-door, I'd shop something to haul the family around in and keep the E30 for weekend and date night duties. Maybe shop a Chevy Tahoe for the family and use it as a tow rig to get the E30 to events? If you keep the four-door you can use it for every situation I can think of assuming your baby mama is cool with that.

I already have a Ridgeline, so I'm not overly concerned with having the practicality of the 4 door. But it was something I considered that, even as a fun car, it would be easier to move around extra people.

For an E30, two door  is always better

Actual advice - Get the four door running and sell it for profit.

I'm glad you aren't closer or else I'd offer to buy the 4 door. Actually I have been talking about doing a fly to the west coast, buy a car the week of the event and drive it to the challenge one year...

My wife and I both had e30s before our baby. Once she was not, not pregnant we sold the two door to buy a Focus hatch. And kept the 4 door.  By the time our son was born we had replaced the 4 door with a Matrix XRS.

My son takes up all of my free time, and I don't mind at all.  In a few years I'll get back out to the garage working on projects, but these days the only car work I'm doing is required maintenance.

Fyi, Oregon and Washington are the best places to find old stuff in really good condition. The cloudy days preserve the paint (where the 4dr is from), unlike the constant sun damage you get in California (where the 2dr is from). I'm originally from Michigan and I hope I NEVER have to touch a rusty car again.
