I don't see how this is bad. You claim on budget what's on the car. You didn't use the whole $10 stick of poly, you used a portion of it. That portion goes in budget.
Pretty simple.
But you had to buy the whole stick, it still cost me $10 to make it. Do you get to claim that your turbo you added only cost $150 because you bought 10 containers full of them from china but only used one of them?
You'd count tools on the budget too, then?
If I had to go out of my way to buy like some crazy special tool from the dealer that I'll never use again? Yes.

Leafy strikes me as one of those people that make people hate autocrossing. In cases like Lemons it's the spirit of the rule that matters.

You should see his autocross build thread.

In reply to Leafy:
You keep assuming you have to BUY something. That's not the way Challengers think.
What if I could find that $10 stick in the discount pile because it was damaged? Maybe free in the dumpster? Or maybe I buy it for a different purpose, then use the 1/2 stick drop to build my bushings. Why should I have to pay for the half I didn't use? Your manufacturing cost is a meaningless number to me.
Unusual tools- even from a for-profit mechanic, I have NEVER been billed for them having to buy a specialty tool to do my job.
And yes, the China discount would apply. It is pretty unlikely it would happen the way you describe, but cars have done it. The sucker Vette bought 3 cooling fans from an M1 tank in an auction, and billed their budget for only 1.
What if I am just a better negotiator, and able to get the pallet price for only 1 turbo? Should I be penalized because I legitimately paid less?
If it is on the car, it is in the budget. Works pretty well.
The budgeting out a single item price out of a large purchase has bugged me as well but it is acceptable through the rules. In our example we got the stall wall material for free and made all of the suspension pivot bushings for a Miata, the shock mount bushings, and motor mounts. Our total outlay was $0 in real money and challenge $. No funny math and no possible way to come close just buying the parts.
The single price out of a large purchase thing is self-policing.
Nobody is going to buy a thousand turbos to get the price of one new one down to $50 just so they can go hope to win at an event with no real monetary prize.
Nobody is buying new turbos, anyways.

Tell you what...
Bring your car to the Challenge next year. Run exhibition class (since you will be over budget).
If your car beats mine on the autoX, I'll pay your entry fee. I'll still buy you a beer.
But if mine beats yours, you will owe me my entry fee.
Only difference is, I will do it for $2015. Yes, Challenge math.
Don't forget your Hoosiers.
For whatever it's worth, Paul.... that's not a bet you're likely to win.

True story.
Homeboy has more in his turbo than i have in the entire MX6, though. Just turbo. Not turbo setup, just turbo.

Challenge is too far of a tow for no chance of contingency. Travel expenses would be like half the worth of your entire car.
In reply to Leafy:
Leafy, can you post a link to your car?

That's so cute. I ain't skeered.
Posted a top finish time this year (minus a cone), intend to do better next year.
A big ass turbo does not make the car turn better.
But my real point is to encourage people who don't get it to give it a try.
I didn't say the turbo was big.
His car is real ricetastic. I like it.
But yeah... i'd be interested to see how it stacks up, but like he said, there's no real point for him. I wouldn't bother bringing this car down, either. Totally different car with nothing to prove. Plays with $50k+ SSM builds.
Plus, it's easier to make comments on the internet without actually having competed at the event, right?

I consider it an investment.

And I probably have the only aero setup of a competitive ssm car that comes in under a challenge budget.
