Looking for a cheap rallycross car I stumbled on these two. Which would you chose?
or
It weren't for the rallycross part I'd say Subaru. If you want to have any spare wheels in modern sizes you'll get the Isuzu. NOTHING fits the Subaru bolt patern. Unless you re-drill your hubs for 6-lug Toyota truck wheels (might bump you to another class), or you find some 80s Puegeot wheels (about as likely as finding Bigfoot riding a unicorn in the Kentucky Derby) you're stuck with whats on there.
Well, if you actually want to be competitive, I'd choose the iMark, actually. It at least would stand a chance in the FWD classes (maybe). The XT would have almost no chance of doing well in the AWD classes.
Curious why no RWD cars? Can be found cheap, and are the most fun for rallycross (and the most competitive of "old/cheap" cars in their respective classes. I'd check out these in your local area and price range if you're not against RWD.

or...if you plan to trailer it to events...

There's also an e30 318i (early M10 car like mine) a couple hours from you for like $1200. I'd obviously be partial to that, but thought I'd go against the grain and post some other ideas too :)
That's an XT with the DL (aka base model) trim. It's not 4WD. Which means it has no advantage whatsoever except for weirdness. Get the Isuzu, quicker and much more fun to drive. I have an XT, but it's a 4WD turbo. With the anemic EA82 and FWD they are nothing more than a novelty.
Everybody automatically assumes all Subarus are 4WD for some reason. Not the case...

a local Peugeot 505 rallycrosses with (IIRC) Toyota pickup truck wheels (TRD)...it was all he could find to fit the car more or less correctly.
I would actually prefer RWD, those two were just the ones that jumped out to me in my quick search. I knew the Subaru was not AWD. I like weird cars, not really looking to be super competitive just have some fun.
The buy in budget for this will be less than 1k and it will be a while before I can pull the trigger on anything just seeing what's out there.
Man I miss my Starlet.
Highly recommend, I had a blast in mine (stock) even on the original 1.3 @ 250k
That starlet does look like the perfect tool for the job. I wonder if that would fit on an 8' utility trailer...
They both suck almost equally. The I-mark has a higher probability of failing before you even get to run (because Isuzu) and the XT has a higher probably if disassembling itself on course from severe body rot (because 80s Subaru).
The answer is Neon.

Having spent an entire summer driving a non-4WD Subaru DL wagon (the slowest thing on the planet, I might add), and having a sister that owned a non-4WD Justy as her first car, I don't make that assumption about Subarus.
I simply don't know the XTs very well and didn't recognize that it was a non-4WD model, that's all. Don't assume what I assumed

While that is cool and unusual, it's also 3k more than my budget. And an automatic.

And a roll bar.
As has already been mentioned, those 80's Subaru's were really, really slow. I remember driving a brand new one in 1980 on the highway, flooring it in top gear at 60 mph and getting absolutely no acceleration. Zero, zip, nada, no matter how long I left it floored. I had to shift down to get it to pick up any speed at all.
