I've got a '90 half ton 4x4 that needs a rear axle. Car-part shows 2wd rear axle is different but of course doesn't say how or what. Anybody just know the answer?

5 lug vs 6 lug for one difference

I also think the 2wd are spring under and the 4x4 are spring over but I am not 100% sure. Its been awhile since I was under one.

nah they're all under. the difference is axles and drums, think the width is the same.

It may be a width thing. S-10's were like that. The front track on the 4x4 was wider so the rear had to match. It will probably work, just look funny.

Just looked up axle shafts, yep 4x4 is 2" longer. That'll be 4" wider total.

Possibly different gear ratios?

Gear ratios were the same for all of them, 3.08, 3.23, 3.42, 3.73. Difference, as has been noted, 5/6 lug and the 4" wider track. All sit under the springs, rates of course are different.shock locations should be in the same place as they bolt to the frame in the same location on both trucks.
