As far as which one Quigley uses.... I think they probably have a similar conversation for each application just like we're having now. The whopping two Quigleys I've actually experienced in my lifetime, one was a Chevy G20 from the 80s. It had a traditional box in it with a floor shifter that looked exactly like the shifter console in Dad's 88 K2500, so I'm guessing NP241. The other Quigley I saw had the dial on the dash that looked like it was out of the S10 parts bin, so it was some sort of electronic unit.
If I were Quigley, I would just snag whatever TC that was used in the OEM trucks for that year and adapt around it. That makes easy integration with ECMs and stuff available on the shelf. Also takes advantage of the OEM's big R&D budgets. Let Ford or Chevy spend money on those conversations and just follow their lead.
I thought the NP205 was the go-to transfer box answer. Then again I haven't read an Off-road magazine since 1989....

For as many 4x4s as I have owned, paying attention to transfer cases was the lowest thing on my list evidently. I never learned a lick about them other than rebuilding a Dana 18 in an old scout.

Pirate4x4 is dead, has been for about a year now. Vertical Scope killed it. We're all over at irate4x4.com now.
The majority of our efforts of letting the remaining Pirate visitors know where everyone has gone, has been met with censorship and often banning. Vertical Scope has such a sandy vag over it that if you try to post the text irate4x4 over there, it's automagically changed to Pirate4x4.
I suspect it wouldn't be too hard to fit a Jeep 242 to a GM, it should be about the same bolt pattern, it's easy enough to swap a Jeep D300 to a 700R4/4L60 with an input shaft swap, D300 fits in place of a 231J, and I stuck a 242J in place of the 231J on my XJ, bolted right in place. Wil a 241C input fit in a 242J?
Also Berkley Vertical Scope!
Sounds like irate4x4 is pirate4x4 without all the p-ness.
This photo makes me wonder... I thought the Tcase bolted directly to the trans on GMs. So there is an adapter?
In reply to Curtis73 (Forum Supporter) :
There usually is, to reconcile the transmission not having ears on the end.
i mean, they probably COULD just cast transmission housings with ears, but then they'd have to make a new housing every time they wanted a different case or wanted to clock it differently.
What's the one on the left? i assume it is a single range unit since the chain is so far forward and there is no VSS.
The one on the left is the BW44xx from an Astro and the one on the right is the NP242j
I always assumed that they just bolted to the back. I knew dad's Allison had an adapter tube because his cracked and started leaking.
4L60E butt end:
Yeah, the 2WD 4L60 has a different output shaft (I think) and a tail housing that bolts on instead of the tcase. Makes it really nice and easy to replace the slip yoke bushing. Tcase bolts on in place of the tailshaft housing.
In reply to Curtis73 (Forum Supporter) :
And you'd need to have ears to use through-bolts to the transfer case, becsuse you're not going to be putting bolts through the transfer case.
A lot of the reason for the adaptor is so they can have a flange without making the assembly like two inches larger all around.
In reply to gearheadE30 :
Yes, the shaft is different. Can't swap one for the other without complete disassembly, at which point you may as well just rebuild the one you already have.
I knew the transmissions were different (output shaft mainly) I just never realized there was piece between the trans and TC

Oy. That's just terrible. I love it.

Austin is the fella with the foresight, knowledge, skills and ability to make it happen. There was a lot of chatter about going elsewhere from the majority of the regulars, when things started going downhill. But where? Austin was working behind the scenes, and before VS changed their TOS, Austin scooped up the entire library of info at old Pirate, a lot of it was migrated over to irate, and at first you could request to have any of your threads migrated over from Pirate to Irate. That lasted less than 6 months, VS' lawyers sent nasty-gram threats. VS changed their TOS, so now "they own" anything you put on their forum.
VS has been mercilessly censoring new Pirate, they've hidden chit chat to visitors, you've got to be a member to see it now, there's a large contingent of Irate's members that have been banned on Pirate now. It's pretty sad, I cut my forum teeth on old Pirate, but Austin has done a good job of making a new place feel like home, and has brought some great sponsors, vendors, and member perks along too.
The running joke, is we all hope Austin has "rate4x4" ready to go whenever irate4x4 meets its demise.

Evidently not when it comes to transfer cases :)
In reply to bigdaddylee82 :
I'm going to join over at irate and see if y'all can take this TC conversation a little further.
