My guesses:

  1. immobilizer?
  2. Starter relay?
  3. Starter itself?

In reply to DukeOfUndersteer:

I'm going to go with an badly spliced in immobilizer that shorted when he was driving around without a hood on.

Transmission PARK sensor failure. Car thinks it is not in park so it won't try to start. Not sure that that would have caused it to "die on him" but could be a secondary issue.

As a side game, can we also play "where is the hood?" because that could play into the diagnosis.

hmmm, he does sound completely incapable of diagnosing anything, so the potential for easy fix is high.

Immobilizer comes to mind first, but I'd want to know why the seller says bad engine - was he driving it around without oil in it for that week after the shop?

Maybe he's so smart that he's tricked you all into thinking he's dumb. I vote actually needs an engine but he wants you to think you've out smarted him, and has disabled the starter so you think that's all that's wrong. He's an evil genius.

Immobilizer (the factory one anyways) on those doesn't prevent cranking, just injector pulse.

If they say bad engine, always assume bad engine, and pay accordingly. If it's not a bad engine, then you win the game. $2000 is to high for that car with a bad engine IMO.

I'd be hard pressed to go higher than $1200.

I think I agree. Rough, but running G35 coupes go for just a couple hundred more around here. Sedans are even cheaper. Any non-running vehicle has to be really special for me to pay more than $1000-$1500.

Watch out, if you low ball him he will pull the rimz off it.

The car seems to be wearing temp tags. Therefore, I suspect he knows nothing about the history of the car.

I'll bet he bought it not running or rough running. Sent it to a shop for diagnostic work (the lot of money) and they confirmed it needs an engine so he's unloading.

I'd want to see the shop receipt and maybe talk to the shop.

Bad ground. I bet the "shop" wasn't a repair shop. Probably a speed shop and the goofs there didn't hook up a ground completely, it drove around awhile until the wire completely disconnected from vibration. Happened to me once.

Head gasket replaced incorrectly (cut or wrong one) and coolant hydrolocked the motor? I'd probably go with the motor being toast after seeing that.

What's a used VQ35 go for these days?

Wouldn't you be going back to the shop to get your money back?

Ask if the engine can be turned over by hand/breaker bar.

Upside down head gasket or similar cut off oil supply and has caused something to seize Is my guess

I may come across as a jerk with this, but if the person types the way he talks, I'm staying as far away as possible from this vehicle.

I can't even understand what he's trying to say...?

Head gasket was replaced, potato salad liquid nails blackberry!

If he leaves the rimz on it and the gas tank is full.
