Like I said in the heading, with all the trinkets in cars nowadays, why so few heads up displays?
Cause they mess with your view of the road in front of you? I've had them, and dislikes them for that reason.
GM just showed an app for google glasses that provides real time HUD info for the new Stingray. Kinda scary to me.
I loved it in my Comp G. My wife hated it and turned it off as soon as she got in. I though it was great.
It's almost a novelty to me. I've only driven 2 cars with it, a s13 240sx and a c5 vette, and I found it more distracting than useful. Not to mention the covettes display looked like something from the 80s
I never had a car with them... that said, my current g/f can't stand to ride in my Disco due to the tiny wires in the windshield for the defrost. They drive her nuts
Good question. I really like the C5 HUD. I've looked into some of the aftermarket HUD kits, but none of them seem all that great.

have it in my GTP, too... i've tried shutting it off just because a few times and it just feels wrong to drive without it in that car..
We had it in my wife's '03 Bonnie SSEi. I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me. Probably one of those things that the public just doesn't want...they're busy enough looking at their cell phones, ipads, and nav screens anyway, not enough time to actually look out any part of the windshield.

How long before the HUD starts showing that stuff?
it was neat in my grand prix but most of the time i left it off, just because when it was on i still found myself glancing down at the cluster like i always do.
My dad's Buick has it. I think it is pretty cool especially with the nav info on display. Gives a big turn indicator and distance. I saw a video clip on the new Mazda 3 with HUD. Looks interesting and good for an inexpensive car. They use a flip up screen on the dash so no need for a different (expensive) windshield.
I love the HUD in my Dad's C5 Z06. Use it all the time. He angles it as high as it will go, I put it so it's just above the hood. When cruising around it's so nice to barely move your eyes downward to see your speed. The 8th gen and newer civics essentially have the same thing and I like it a lot.
I haven't driven a true HUD, but I really like the move-the-instrumentation-really-close-to-the-base-of-the-windshield setup on some newer cars. Civic Hybrids and Priuses have this. The 3rd gen Prius also has an awesome capacative touch that displays where your fingers are in relation to the steering wheel controls on the display, that's very handy and not intrusive.
The only cars I have driven with it are BMW 6 series. I like it. I have an app on my phone that does it too, but the phone can slide off the dash too easily for it to be useful.
I find it useful for long nighttime drives. Less likely to speed (a lot) when there is no one else on the freeway to judge speed from.

Garmin has one out now.
I thought HUD was just about the limit of stupid until we bought a Acadia with it. It works great, it is never in the way and like others have said, the nav works great with it. There are different settings including one with a digital analog tach, but the basic digital speed and outside temp is perfect. It also shows the radio station info briefly when changing stations.
price. This tech is expensive. And with computers monitoring everything anyways, it isn't necessary for most situations. Just like GPS though, eventually it will trickle down and be available in most cars, but that will take a long while.
