Sounds kind of what I was expecting. Sorry it turned out that way. Older luxury cars are hard to buy as it seems most have been owned by morons by this point.

Completely went the way I expected. We went to lowes with the kids since sheetz is right in front of it and let them splurge on clearance halloween decorations. So it cost us $8 to look at a car that I'm not buying and we got decorations for next year
It's very hard to find straightforward people in general. Online or in person. That's why I have animals.
Igor texted me today that i could have it for $1400(he was asking $2300).
I don't think i would go more than 700, there are ones with everything functioning for 1600, and one for 2200 that says it's been stored every winter since new.
Torn, 3 days ago a 10-15 year old luxobarge sounded genius, today it sounds like a better plan to use that 2 grand for something else, like putting an LQ4 in my impala.
I have had a blast with craig and his list lately. We are going with a new engine package on our chump car so I've got all of our old engines and engine parts up for sale. I have a bottom end listed for an H22. $100 for a perfectly good block and rotating assembly. Guy shows up with a prelude that has an obvious blown head gasket and maybe only two lug nuts on each wheel (3 on one). The guy says "Look I don't have all $100, I had to get a payday loan and they would only give me $50 so thats all I got." I kind of felt bad and don't want to see anyone without a ride (I have some compassion) so I was going to let it go, then the guy started going on about how he's screwing the system. Collecting welfare, unemployment, and working full time under a different name; but, can't muster $100 to get a bottom end. Told him to kick rocks and left. Thank god for google voice numbers.
I also have my S2000 up for sale on Craigslist just to see if anyone will bit at the price listed. Got some kid who said he's been looking for a bone stock S2K in that color combo forever. Shows up with his fiancé and they seem like a nice couple. Kid starts telling me he's buying a house, just bought a new car for his woman, his great job he got through family hook-ups and the promotion he got. I don't like bullE36 M3ting too much with people, I've got plenty more things to be doing so I said test drive it, leave me keys to your car, and we'll talk numbers.
I get the "well because I'm buying a house I can't spend a lot so what's your bottom dollar?" The price I have listed brother man, the ad said firm, I mean firm. I don't need to sell it so I'm not desperate to let it go. Throws out a number $4k less than what I'm asking and says that's what KBB states for this car. I tell him to pull it up on his phone and sure enough that's the bottom dollar asking point for a car in bad condition. Kid throws a temper tantrum, clinches his fist acts like he wants to fight me, calls me every name under the sun, and tries walking off with my keys. Luckily I still had their keys and that diffused the situation pretty quickly. Otherwise I thought I was going to have to body slam this spoiled brat.
Problem is Ive gotten about 300 text from the kid in the past 3 days asking for me to sell the car because it's his dream car and he just can't find a clean one for sale.
My buddy wrecked his 200x Ram 1500. He bought it back from the insurance company for $700. He thought a pal of his wanted it to fix it up, but the guy flaked. My buddy just wanted his money back out of it.
He threw it on CL for $700, couldn't get a bite.
A week later he put it on CL for $1500 and got a $700 offer within minutes.
People are stupid.
My RX7 sat in my garage in a semi-for-sale state for 9 months because I didn't want to deal with CL people. Fortunately I was able to sell it through my local Facebook rotary group, and I got my asking price with no haggling.

People like to negotiate. I'm guilty of this myself. I can't tell you the number of times I've gone to purchase something and am turned off by the fact that the seller has "firm" listed in their ad even if what they're selling is totally worth what they're asking.

I don't like to negotiate. I put something up for sale at the minimum I want for it. If someone comes at me with a lower offer, I see it as they don't want it, but if I give them that much money then they'll take it off my hands. I'd rather throw something away at a huge loss than deal with people who want something like that.
I've found that on stuff not advertised as "obo" if i ask "are you negotiable?" They will do my negotiating for me and come in lower than i wanted to be anyway

It is important to make people feel like they are getting a deal. You need to act like you can't let it go for the number they offer just to make them feel like they got the best out of you.
I tried the whole firm pricing on Craigslist, it just turned me into a jerk.
I just believe that negotiating is one of the benefits of person to person selling. Otherwise, I'll just go to eBay, government auctions, or Wally World.
With the car I was selling....many people started the first email with what is your best price? My ad indicated I wanted $3800 or best offer. I don't know whether is it's Pawn Stars or what.....but if you haven't so much as looked at the car, or even asked any questions about it annoys me when they ask what is your best price.
You want to low ball me fine, throw a number out there, maybe I'll bite. However don't think in the first few days of having a car listed, that I'm going to tell you the lowest I'm willing to take.
Hell, buying a new to me vehicle has been an exercise in frustration through the normal dealer channels....
Just spent over 20 minutes at a not busy dealership without one person saying a thing to me. This is after multiple emails prior stating I was going to be there at some point. Oh well, their loss. The dodge dealer down the road, on the other hand, is bending over backwards to get my business/sale.

And Facebook.
Posted some bike tires for sale. Potential buyer said she was interested and asked for shipping. Within an hour, I found a box, calculated Priority Mail shipping and PM'd a quote.
Two days later: crickets....
you're looking for an E38? Check this one out... I've been pondering it for awhile but went in a different direction. Carfax looks good, and it appears to be a very solid car. And it isn't on Craigslist.

Tell him to pound salt.
I have heard so many stories about this type of crap - either he wants it or he doesn't. If he does, he will find the money. The part where he tried to walk with your keys - even more reason to tell him to get lost.
I think person to person selling typically implies some negotiation, but I think as a buyer you have to show earnest interest to reach that point.
Who are these people who bother to reach out about cars/trucks/whatevers that they have no serious interest in actually following through on?
Craigslist definitely tests my patience, but without it how would we find such deals? Certainly not at dealerships. I feel like putting in the extra work pays off for people like us, so it is what it is. A lot of people can't be bothered, so advantage us

At least you recognized the de facto uselessness and adapted your strategy. Some people act like their listing on CL is more of an excuse to unload social commentaries than actually sell their items.
I've had every stupid thing happen to me including physical intimidation by a large group of 'buyers' and being used as a free taxi service during a test drive. I guess the difference is that I never thought that people were any less E36 M3ty than they turn out to be in the end, so it just seems like par for the course. I go in with low expectations and generally, they are met. I'm not complaining. I've sold tons of parts and cars on CL and will continue to do so.
I've dealt with a lot of idiots on Craigslist, but generally the distribution of idiots is still less than the general public, so I'd call it a push.
I never go firm but i do always add that i will only negotiate in person. I ignore alot of whats your bottom dollar texts.
Pat,
Are you still looking for a comfy ride, super car?
