Is the dog in play or not?
If you need something with a wayback for dog purposes, I suggest the V60CC with the B6 twincharged mildbrid drivetrain. Smooth, boatloads of torque, decent interior space, better-than-SUV ride height and handling. If you can find a non-Cross-Country one, all the better.
I'm really digging that Cadillac up there, too, if you are OK with the dog on the seats.

CT4 Blackwing starts at $63k and gives you 472hp/445 lbs-ft in a RWD chassis that everybody raves about. You can have a 6 speed manual or a 10 spd auto.
I just built this one for $70,015 on their website. It includes the high performance interior options and fancy heated/cooled seats with two tone leather. If I'd chosen a no cost exterior color, or skipped the bronze wheels it would've been under $70k:
I officially change my answer.
But if used is an option, 2021 and 2022 M2s with very low mileage in the low 50s.

A friend got a new Integra Type S, with a very similar use case. Damn is that thing fun to drive, and pretty nice inside. The review hype is real, and it has a big back seat and hatch for the dog and stuff.

Lightly used V60 recharge:
It looks like this:
Goes 0-60 in a respectable 4.4. It's a hybrid with 40ish miles of pure EV range
And it gets accolades like this: "the V60 Recharge is such a compelling package that every brand should make one."
Brand new , the high trimT8 Polestar (which is the one you want) is just a hair over your budget at $72.5
Anything you buy in that price bracket is going to loose a lot of value in the first couple years. Depreciation alone would probably buy a Honda Civic. I'd opt for a slightly used with lots of factory warranty left and get a beater car for dog hauling.

As an unabashed wagon fan, man, that is a good looking car!
I was going to say Audi RS3 until this showed up. That volvo is gorgeous.

Wow, I agree. That's a pretty car. I'll look at those for sure.
Update:
Showed the wife the Volvo, which I thought she'd be stoked about, but she says: ten years ago with kids in the house I would have loved that. Still high on he M2. Contacted dealer in town and can order for MSRP, 3 month wait, which is far quicker than I thought. Also weird that she doesn't like the blue, or my second choice, grey. She likes the black (?!). Which is really weird because this is not her normal style.
Anyway, by next weekend they will have a black and white in stock and I'll see if she wants to go check them out. Black is with tan leather but auto, unfortunately.
What a dilemma. A wife that wants a M car.

We worked a long time to get to this place... I hope she is still in after we check them out.
I'd be after that CT4 BW. People absolutely rave about it. Getting a dog in an M2 sounds difficult. The type R or S sounds like a good option.
That Volvo is hot! I had no idea they even made such a thing.
