Nashville would be an interesting spot too. Fly in to BNA. Head east from there.

It'd be great to have a local "Guide" that could help with car purchasing things. Even without the local guide, It'd be doable. Meet at Opryland. find a route to Bristol for the night. Run through a few of the great roads in western NC then head to the coast. Shoot, I have friends in the area.

Start point:

  • Airline hub or urban area with a few major airports.
  • Plenty of Challenge priced cars available in the area.
  • Simple laws/regulations for an out of state driver to buy a car and drive it away (30 day temp tags, keep the plates...).

Without looking up the details yet, Nashville, Charlotte, Atlanta, or Baltimore/DC area could work, but I think DC is probably the best. Include some bendy roads thru the Appalachians and call it  "Trail of the Draggin': Convoy to the Challenge" or something like that for the T-shirt and stickers.

I'll mow the lawn a few more times for ideas. We should discuss it more in person at the Challenge this year with whoever shows up. I'm guessing that if we get about 50 people interested, probably about 10 will actually be able to show up after all the details of cost, location, and time-frame are tallied. Even doing it alone would be fun, so I expect that this is something we can actually have happen.

I like the idea of picking a common starting state and funnel the herd to a common finih location. Trying to figure out a distance/travel cost factor to even out the field so they are on common ground at departure. For example, I would not want someone from California NOT to compete, but they would be at a big advantage over a guy who flew in from FL and had to drive to the east coast. So build a budget factor in for zip code or whatever. Extra bonus points if you convince the seller to ride along.

If organizing such an event, I would pre-recruit as many reader-volunteers  along to the way to be available for  the duration to provide rescue/help/shop/beer-repair or whatever for people who run into trouble.  Contact information to be available to participants.

If I were doing the organizing, I would start in the NW and run the field through the wasteland of the West/Midwest towards FL to arrive at the challenge. As the field get closer the concentration of rescue volunteers would be thicker and there could be a simultaneous closing ceremony for two distinct but very interesting events.

Distance traveled over time and the most number of  paid admission tickets to cheesy roadside attractions would determine the "winner" while at the same time prevent cannonballing. Special trophy for most expensive repair and most $$$ spent on gas and oil.  Might work in a factor that looks at number of people/vehicle so that we see a school bus full of merry pranksters arrive at  the challenge on Saturday.

In reply to NOHOME :

I'd love to have it start in the NW and cross the whole country, but I think that to get a decent number of people participating the best chance is to have it start in the SE and finish at the Challenge. If nobody gets a divorce or goes to jail the first time we try it, it could go somewhere else the next time.  Even have people drive from the NW or SoCal and join at the Fly and Drive start point. If someone wants to try a LA or SD to Vegas or Denver and gets at least 8 - 10 participants, I'd sign up if the timing is good. Anywhere but Canada wink.
