I went downstairs to turn up the thermostat... I left the Barrett Jackson auction on the TV and I came down just in time to see some rich guys bidding 300 grand on a 62 Corvette. I don't agreed that money can improve your tastes....

But the cars I would like to buy all cost under 30k. If I had millions of dollars would I suddenly lose interest in these cars?

No.

It would take a while.

I'd rather have a fleet of things I'm not afraid to ball up.

If I had unlimited funds I'd use it to build the most bitchin' Yugo you've ever seen so, no, I don't think money would improve my taste any.

Money would merely facilitate having fancy cars to go with the E36 M3ty ones. The are a handful of extremely expensive cars I'd be in a heartbeat given the resources, but it wouldn't stop me from having a massive collection of eclectic, cheap crap too.

Yeah, it would. You'd actually think about more expensive cars differently, as they'd actually become a possibility. You might consider a '62 Corvette and decide "nah, it's not what I want", but you'd actually be able to consider it.

For example, instead of building a Locost, I might have built a Hawk Stratos if I'd had more cash. Or I might have just bought a Caterham and spent more time driving

If you've got a net worth that's an order of magnitude larger than you have now, then you can afford to ball up a car that's worth an order of magnitude more than you could now.

I'd buy that fleet of RHD neons. But I could also afford full size versions of the hot wheels I loved as a kid.

Yes and No, if I had unlimited funding I have a list of caars to fill my dream garage some are quite spendy while others are not. From the top and leaving open the fact that there would likely be more if the funds magically appeared.

Honda CRV for the misses which is what she wants

2011 Mustang GT Convertable also for SWMBO

2011 STI wagon

1993ish 911 Carrera4 cabriolet

2011 Audi R8 (that's the spendy one)

Lotus Elise

Cost no object builds of my Civic and Rabbit projects

1974 VW Thing (my first car and maybemy first love)

1950's GMC truck on a more modern 70's blazer frame 4wd

1990's Land Rover Defender 100

199x Ford van converted to 4wd with camper build

2011 Toyota Tundra

and the list goes on

I like '62 Corvettes even though I can't afford one. So what if other people have more money?

And now that she's stopped pandering to popular music she's even better. The remade versions of her old hits are stunningly beautiful.

I think I'd spend more money on parts/supplies fr and a place to keep my cheap crap than I would for pricey finished product. Leaving aside all the other things I'd get(indoor/outdoor gun ranges, etc), I'd buy a massive warehouse to serve as service/fab shop and storage for a hoard of more crap cans than I could ever get around to.

ACVWs. Nothing rare, most would likely end up with Subaru powerplants.

'80s Subarus: wagons, hatches, and coupes in particular. I have a thing for EA81/82 cars. A few left stock, a few to offroad, one or two to hot rod to the hilt with modern components.

A collecton of somewhat pedestrian GM cruisers from 1930-1980. Again, some stock, a few LS powered for highway treks. I don't care for the popular ones, their popularity has ruined them for me.

One Locost... I haven't seen one with a flat four yet.

One E34, soft spot for these.

Yugos... because really, why the F not?

'80s Audis: anything 5cyl powered and AWD. 5000TQ wagon with stick(were these badged as 200?) would top the list.

The Challenge-priced Craigslist antique commercial trucks of the day. These would likely be put back to running and driving condition and resold. A keeper would receive a Detroit Diesel and stay forever.

Early '90s F250 2WD longbed with an International 7.3. Miss my old work truck desperately.

Wife had requested as of late for, of all things, a new Fiesta five door with a stick... I'm shocked!

Perception may change with money, but my logic won't. What's more fun: one $100,000 car, or 100 $1,000 cars? I think the one thing I could spend real money on is a Kent powered MK1 Escort in rally trim.

This. I would probably spend $60 k each on dailies for Mrs. Duke and I. Everything else would be under $30k each, but of course I'd have a road race car, a rallycross car, an autocrosser, a tow vehicle and trailer...

I would of course park a Pantera or Viper in the garage, but I plan to do that in a few years even if I don't get miraculously rich so I don't consider that a change :)

I was beginning to worry I was the only one here who likes things like that in addition to heavily modified cheap crap.

I love heavily modified cheap crap! But there's something to be said for insanely overpowered semi-supercars too ;) I'm just waiting to see which one wins the race to the bottom of the value scale by the time I'm ready to buy in about 3 more years.

No, but I have fairly expensive tastes now. With money I'd be able to satisfy those tastes. I'd still want a '69 Hemi Charger... and various other classic muscle cars... and my "wagons from every decade" collection... although in recent years, I've developed more of an appreciation for traditional pre-war classics. I will say I'd shy away from pure show cars (like that aforementioned $300K '62 Vette) and other cars that I really wouldn't want to drive.

I'd pay someone to renovate so I could spend more time in the garage and shop. And I'd buy a nice used e39 M5. What's all that? $45k?

Yes, your tastes would change. It's not that you wouldn't still appreciate the "heavily modified crap" as someone called it, but you'd pay more attention to other things you could afford.

It would also put you into different circles where you would learn a little class.

I've been picking up bottles along side the road to get enough money to eat while living in condemned houses poor and moderately wealthy (and back). You find that you can live in both worlds and those inbetween. It doesn't change the basic YOU, it only allows you to be "all that you can be". Talk to Tim & Margie, it appears that they might have been less than wealthy to pretty well off now.

Does it appear to have done away with their old selves? No, but I'll bet they will tell you it has expanded their horizons and fine tuned their tastes.

I'd pay cash for a brand-new MX-5 and a Cayman R. Then I'd send my truck off to have all the dings and rust spots fixed – and a really good paint job with about 15 layers of clear coat.

Clearly, my tastes wouldn't change, i'd just be molesting my dream cars sooner than otherwise.
