Maybe because it was before my time, but I think I'm going to be the curmudgeon here and say that I've been impressed by nothing about the Delorean ever.
I mean, they are a genuinely terrible car. They were slow, not engaging to drive, not particularly reliable, the styling hasn't aged well at all. I think the fascination with them is because they are so strange and terrible

Umm... and the movies. It's hard to argue against the idea that without the movies, the Delorean would be just another obscure/interesting car from the British Isles. Since those movies came out during the heart of the Gen-X "emotional development" it's likely the popularity of the car will stay high for another 30 years or so.
It's been commented on in other threads how the back-bone chassis is a near spitting image of a few Lotus chassis.

I think the DMC-12 looks fantastic outside of an odd wheel/tire combo.
Have never driven one or sat in one, only seen in person, but they look like a future unrealized to me.
Doesn't make me feel old, I'm younger than the DeLorean or BTTF

Yeah, the movies too. I didn't mention those because that seemed really obvious. And I'm certain Robert Zemekis picked the Delorean because it was terrible and funky and a rolling punchline at the time. I find that a lot of people don't even realize that by the time BTTF came around, the Delorean was dead and buried.

It is as it was designed by lotus themselves, pretty much just the esprit chassis underneath.

Yes they were slow for the price range they were playing in but they were good driving cars for the time. The Lotus engineering shows - they have 4 wheel independent suspension and handle quite well.
