A popular way to add some pep to a VW Rabbit back in the day? Swap in something with a bit more juice.

A turn-key option in today’s world? How about this 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit fitted with a 16-valve engine fed by a pair of side-draft Webers? Three-piece wheels and Microsquirt, too.

According to the ad, the biggest (and only) …

Wait, does Georgia have some kind of Euro-plate-shape option? What's going on with the rear license plate?

I'm thinking the exact same thing--never saw that before anywhere.  Here in NC we have rear plate only and if you have a "classic car", you can have a vintage license plate from that same year.  No need to have your actual current tag (plate) outside, but just have it in the glove box in case you are pulled over.  Man, I love the South.  We turned drunk driving into a national pastime now known as NASCAR.  cheeky

I wondered the same. Can’t remember that option when I lived there.

I've never seen that before here in GA.

My guess is it's custom and not entirely legal.

I'm waiting for a NC antique plate to show up in the mail...now I need to go shopping for 1981 license plates. That said, I have to wonder how well that provision is know by local law enforcement.

You can order those custom online. They're definitely not legal. I've seen a few Washington state ones around here.

Not speaking for Georgia, but the way some states word their licensing, you need to "display the assigned registration number, clearly legible blah blah blah"  Does not say anything that you need to display the plate you are issued if there is another way to display the registration number.

The VW is cool.  Not $6500 cool, but certainly $3500 cool.

This has been an odd VW thing I've seen thats been going on a while when I went to SOWO back in 2012 and 2013. Lots of people were running around with custom state plates that were euro sized and the police there were being leinent about it at the time.

VW owners lol...

Darn that is a sexy beast.  On the fence on which way to go soon on more power in mine.   1.8t cheaper swap, MUCH faster but kicks me into a crazy autox class.  Or the legal 1.8 16v swap that keeps my in FSP and gets me to  150whp.

Love the vintage Electromotive electronic ignition setup. I've got a brand new one in a box somewhere that was going to go on my GLC before I wrecked it. sad

The graphics make it a real period piece in a good way.

Not sure what the deal is with that plate, but it definitely isn't official.

Ehh...in today's world, I don't think he's that far off the mark. The body shell alone is worth $3500.

Sadly, yeah, I think the days of buying a good Rabbit for $1800 are long past.

Anyone else notice the price is $8k and not the $6500 originally asking.

Yeah it's just custom for car show display only. Standard VW guy vibes mod.
