Instead of “Where’s Waldo,” let’s play “What’s That Car?”

According to the ad, the car disguised as a bush is a Mazda MX-3 GS, but we think it looks an awful lot like a Miata.

Any ideas?

And hey, if you take a chance on the mystery car, the seller says they’ll throw in the ivy and weeds for free. …

Yeah, I'm not convinced that's an MX-3, though I'd love to be proved otherwise.

Let the record reflect that I was looking for an MX-3 when I came across that ad.

I am also thinking Miata and Virginia Creeper, not ivy.

If I remember correctly (and I'm too lazy to look it up) the MX-3 came with a really tiny V6 in one of the trims.

The little chrome door handles are the giveaway to Miata

The real question is not whether it's a Miata or an MX-3 (it's a Miata), but whether there's a hardtop under those vines.

Are none of us going to address the fact that they're asking $1200 for it!?

In reply to JT1 :

yes but the 2.5 is the same block and its a very nice v6.

Super touring version had about 380 hp before they changed the rules to 8500 rpm limit. fully decked out it's redline was 11,200 rpm (2 liter version) . It also used the stock crankshaft which is a forged unit.

It claims a block weight of 225lbs - no flywheel,  accessories, no intake or exhaust manifold. head design by cosworth, diecast blocks with forged crank (mazda equipped) The ford version (found in the probes) got cast iron units.

Then Mazda designed and tooled all the 4 cylinders when ford owned them, then ford sold them off with the exclusive right not to build any more v6's.  The KL series is a very nice engine in general. You need to dry sump the engine for any long high speed g turns, they have an issue if you change the angle of the v6 when installing it inline. its tilted forward in the FWD setup , which has less issues in oil pickup. In england there are a few speed shops that retro fit the v6 into the Miata. The Japanese version had 200 hp

unfortunately they are starting to get rare being quite old. but several piston and connecting rod race suppliers still carry such items that fit this engine. Ive seen one team in Australia turbo charged the engine to 800 hp for racing.

Reminds me of the ST165 a friend of mine sold long ago. The new owner parked it in a borrowed spot and then forgot about it for a few years while vegetation did what it does.

Rumor has it FB won't always give you the option of the correct model. I see a lot of listings with patently false titles, and apologetic descriptions stating that FB wouldn't let them enter the actual model name.

Incidentally, I have toyed with the idea of swapping a Mazda K8 into my AW11, mostly for the novelty of having such a tiny V6. It probably makes even less sense than the more common, but still impossibly rare, Toyota MZ swap.
