Dang it... I can't find it, but there used to be an account of a big group who scootered their way from San Francisco to the east coast, then shipped across the Atlantic to continue the ride to a big Piaggio event. "Ride of a Lifetime" or similar.
I really want a Vespa, but I'm not sure how much further than groceries and coffee I want to ride it...

My dad toured all over Europe and a chunk of Australia in a Vespa back in the 60s. Then used it to commute. What he did not do was attempt to cross the fourth largest country in the world in a bit over a week.
From the event FAQs. I suspect this is largely the point :)
...while scooters and backroads are a great way to see America, it is not the most efficient means of crossing the country on a short schedule.
I have to say I am impressed with the clarity of their definition of a scooter.

Why does this sound like a good idea and why am I calculating the "miles per day"?
We've ridden our scoots 600 miles so far this season. We average about 22-23 mph. Not sure it would be a good idea on a 50cc scooter, but WTH, I'd try it.
