shopping new tires for the avalanche. size is 265/70/17. current tires are nitto terra grapplers that came on it, and have had dry rot cracks for a year now even though they have a november 2011 manufacture date. i am not impressed.

i am looking only at load range E tires, as i tow regularly and the standard load range tires on the truck now like to balloon out under load. i'm used to beefier tires on trucks i tow with, but the truck came with pretty good tread so i've run it out. mostly anyway, they're about 85% worn, close to the bars, but my right rear has a hole on the corner of the tread blocks, big enough to have 2 plugs jammed in with rubber cement, slime in the tire, and it still leaks down to 20psi. it got me through several months, but with the tax return coming back and me not wanting to kill myself or my kids, i need some new rubber.

the local discount tire has some hankook dynapro E range tires in the right size for $767 out the door. the tread looks like it would be good on the road and for the situations where i end up in mud, but also looks like it would handle snow better than my current tires. it makes me ill that tires cost so much anymore. almost thought of going to a 16" wheel for cheaper tires but the rim cost negates the tire savings.

i also thought of sourcing some new takeoffs from ebay, but i'm stuck with the same lower load range tires, and the bridgestones that the newer ones came with have crappy reviews.

what tree would you be barking up?

I've been shopping tires for a while and I keep coming back to the general grabber at2. I don't know if they go up to an e load rating but I would assume so.

I've heard nothing but good things about them. They seem to do well on pavement, dirt, mud and snow. A decent all around tire.

My off-roading friend put them on his jeep and he loves them. They apparently have impressed his group of jeep guys enough that 2 or three of them have switched to the dynapros when their previous brand wore out. They are a little loud on pavement but that is to be expected. But they grip well on and off road and clear mud REALLY well. I have no idea how they would do on snow or ice though.
