The engine "bay" after some tinkering..

messing around trying to get it to start in the cold, constant tinkering lead us to today.

Which of course is a Intercooled VNT 2.2L dodge running 1990 SBEC electronics.

As of today the rail starts and runs.. awaiting axles to take it for a drive.

I have added

(cheapo) rack and pinion 3X3 (three inches wider and longer) Trailing arms. 3 rib bus transaxle. Modified seats so my 6'5" butt will fit. CNC pedals which are adjustable. Removable steering wheel. Disk brakes.

Turn signals (self canceling) heated seats.

and a bunch of other stuff I am forgetting.

I really wanted a buggy when I was younger. I even had one for a while. Unfortunately I was broke at that time so I never got it running. I still have the fiberglass body panels off of it leaning against the wall behind my shop.

Last night I was able to start it and move it under its own power for the first time in more than three years.. To late and to loud for a test drive it isn't really ready for.. Looking to go for a spin friday...

It sure feels good! I was getting pretty tired of looking at it not running.

Well damn... Now I have gone and done it.. Working on the rail and trying to keep it in the shop fixing things.. and instead I half ass a bunch of wiring and nonsense together and take it for a spin...

Now the damn thing is all covered in mud... A complete mess...

In aircooled form it was barely over 1200 lbs fully loaded. I couldnt have added more than 125-150lbs with the engine and stuff. And a couple hundred pounds of extra gear/upgrades. So it still should be light enough to not need all the power it now has

92" wheel base. Makes it easy to toss around in the woods.

Now to fix some of the wiring. For some reason it struggles to turn over when warm and not idling well.

And I need to sort out some kind of surge tank for the fuel. The gas tank really fits nice where it is in front of the engine, but makes working on anything really tough.

So I got bored the other night and instead of spending a couple hundred bucks on gauges figured I could have them for nearly free if I spent several days rigging something together...

So you take two of these

Cut them into pieces... Take the soldering iron and do some plastic welding and end up with something like this..

Still need to make a bezel... but I think I have a plan.. and then form a nice console

GRM enough for ya'll?

More GRM for ya'll...

Old Spotlight buckets can always be found cheap at swap meets... The trouble is I need DOT headlamps...

So.. Some halogen sealed beams.. But how to make them fit...

Yep... Old door panel clips work GREAT, and I have found work even better than the "w" clips you can buy..

I'm stealing your headlight idea. I like the look much better than the typical sealed beam buckets.

More GRM... BMW dimmer control for dash lights... Left over from working on the 89 750il... The buggy feels more luxurious already.. I would have just used the headlight switch from the dodge.. but it doesn't fit my overhead panel very well.

Oh... and Turns... Those are momentary switches with "angel eye" LED's in green. Using a Signal dynamics 1007 module pushing the momentary for one second causes the turn lamps to flash for 7 seconds.. Hold the switch for two seconds and they run for 20.. Push both buttons and the hazards flash... Push buttons again to cancel if needed..

The front lamps are wired with a 10 dollar relay module to use a single filament lamp. I simply used the "brake" and "turn inputs" on the trailer module.. Works great!

Signal Dynamics has another module which will handle the running lights also.. But it means running lights are on all the time.. and I wanted to be able to shut them off..

That signal dynamics relay is slick, but a bit spendy. I'll have to remember it and see how lazy/cheap I'm feeling when I get to that point on the Midlana.

There we go... Video link above should be fixed.. berkeleying google.. Apparently some google plus listing linked to an old email account was linked to my youtube account... and somehow went unverified causing it to be flagged as spam...

problem is not much work is happening to the buggy right now... Priorities you know..
