The old mans looking at a '66 Chevlle 4 door hardtop ( no b-pillar). Its in good shape, but not numbers matching. 327/350trans swapped in. Seems like a case of rare, but not valuable to me. Just wants it to be a driver, not Barrett-Jackson fodder. It's butternut yellow with black interior. Looked through Hemmings and E-bay, couldn't find one for a comparison. Thoughts?
Had one, loved it. Not as much as I loved my stroked 1966 Pontiac Tempest 4 door GTO clone, but it was a sweet 350/th350 driver I wish I had back.
I think the no-B more doors were kinda rare, but even if it was a REALLY rare car, lack of matching numbers probably kills any of the big-dollar value. Somewhat rare + nonmatch #s = don't pay any extra to get it. OTOH, a no-b 327 would be a fantastic daily ride and pretty dang cool to boot.
The only recomendation i would have would be to check carefully for shoddy bodywork, if its original paint that would be best. I have seen those with 3/4 inch thick bondo on them. Other than that its not like there is much else that could be wrong you wont notice.
Rare but not valuable sounds about right. I bought a running 71' Malibu sedan for $400 that was in pretty good shape. The fact that the 307 was leaking oil for years coated the under body well and it was surprisingly rust free. I fixed the brakes on it cleaned it up a bit and sold it for $1200.
In retrospect I would have rather kept it than the fairlane I have now because chevy parts are generally cheaper and easier to come by. And I wouldn't have leaf springs out back.
FWIW, that butternut yellow looked fantastic on the 66 body style.
