Diesel?

http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014/01/14/gm-diesel-off-road-pickups-ready-to-wander/?intcmp=obnetwork

Fox news said: It’s a pickup truck nerd’s dream come true. Although it didn’t go out of its way to advertise them, General Motors left a couple of 4x4 surprises at the Detroit Auto Show. We’ve already been told that the 2015 GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickups will be available with special off road packages that include unique wheels, tires and suspensions geared toward the great outdoors. We’ve also been informed that both trucks will offer diesel engine options starting in 2016, the only ones in their class. Well, it turns out those two great things may be going together. Poke around the stands of each of the brands and you’ll find prototypes of both a Canyon All Terrain and a Colorado equipped with the 2.8-liter four-cylinder Duramax diesel. If they make it to showrooms, and we’re told that they will, there will be nothing else like them on the dirt road. Fuel economy ratings for the trucks haven’t been revealed yet, but the combination of these features has the potential to deliver some serious deep woods action. Now if GM would just throw in the six-speed manual available on the base models of the trucks…hey, a nerd can dream, right?

Yep, the Isuzu D Max is a Colorado chassis is with Isuzu sheet metal and they are already available with the oil burner overseas. Basically GM will slap different front fenders and badges on the D Max to create the Colorado/Canyon.

My roommate was telling me about this. I am going to be in the market for buying a new car/small truck/small SUV in about two years. I had being weighing the options between getting a cool small hatch or a small SUV(MPG and room for my gigantic ass). I really wanted a small truck like a Tacoma for the room but was a little worried about the MPGs. This is going to be a long term DD purchase so I am trying to get exactly what I want.

This news of the Colorado/Canyon getting a diesel is a game changer for me. The styling of the truck really appeals to me. I am a Ford truck kinda guy but never rule out other brands. I am not a brand loyalist like that. I am not too concerned about paying a little bit more for this.

Hi Anti-stance,

Man-O-Man would I be thrilled with something like this. I’m just shy of 200,000 miles on my RX-8 and it’s running perfectly but they tend to do that until they E36 M3 all over themselves; BTDT.

I don’t care about the cylinder count or displacement, any turbo diesel would be awesome and I hope they don’t sanitize it..let it be all grr-got-grr-got-grr-got.

My friend of a friend with info at Toyota told me "there's no market for a diesel Tacoma" so it's not going to be coming to the us. They are going to make a hybrid taco though. Meh.

In reply to Strizzo:

I have nothing against hybrids, I was actually considering a Prius after my roommate had a loaner Prius for about a week. However, a hybrid small truck isn't as appealing as a diesel small truck to me. When it comes to cars, I'd love a hybrid. If Toyota brought their diesel in the Tacoma, I'd have a tough choice to make. I do understand Toyota not bringing it over it doesn't make dollars or sense.

In reply to RX Reven':

Same boat, I don't care about the displacement or cylinder count as much at MPGs and durability.

Or.... or.... Jeep could trump them all if they buy MEV's pickup package for the four door.

And included the 3.0 diesel with a manual. I know, I'm picky and in the vast, quiet minority who own cars for a decade or more.

Two words: Integral generator.

I always thought a hybrid truck would be a bitchin' way to move AC power to a workplace.

I am assuming, of course, that the truck is being purchased for WORKING, and not because one needs to have a bed as a fashion accessory.

Paris Hilton should drive a truck it could go for both. LOL

Problem being it will likely cost as much if not more than a full-size truck.

Still interested

The diesel’s base price $33,520 for the Chevy and $34,875 for the GMC, and that's not even 4x4.

Only available on the top 2 trim levels for both makes, only available in a 4 door, and only with an auto.

396 lb ft of torque from a 2.8l is impressive though.

I had higher hopes than I should have. I've seen a handful of the Colorados in the wild now, they really don't do anything for me. I don't think I've seen a Canyon yet. I haven't been in either, but as much as I want a diesel in a little pick up, they've, "gee wizzed," and priced me out of their market demographic.

The mid size market isn't cheap to get into. The Ridgeline starts just a little under $30k and gets terrible mileage. I haven't looked at the Tacoma's in a while but they aren't cheap. I'm actually surprised they are starting where they are as the 3/4 tons are north of $50k and $60k+ if you want some options.

I prefer the looks of the Canyon, looks a lot like the fullsize. I'm already working on convincing the wife to trade in the Ridgeline for one once the diesel hits the streets. I've heard rumblings of mid 30's mpg. That's damn impressive for a truck that actually has some torque

Its a truck, give it a year. They will have at LEAST a 5k rebate. Then you can have a loaded up 4x4 Diesel for under $30k.

I sat in a friend's Z71 colorado, and although I'm normally a Ford guy, I really liked it. The inside fit and feel was kind of like a modern equivalent to my 2nd gen Explorer - enough luxuries to make it pleasant without being over the top, and large enough to be comfy without feeling like an apartment.

Add 30mpg and almost 8k towing and I'm interested - they're not cheap but still less than similarly equipped full size trucks that are too big to be comfortable to me.

I wonder if they'll need diesel exhaust fluid? That's such a bodge that it would seriously dent their appeal for me, not to mention off setting some of the mileage gain.

Every. Damn. Time.

When did "I want a diesel" turn into "I want every damn option on the list and the TruCoat"? Every manufacturer who sells a diesel has to shove the loaded package down your throat. Screw that.

this fulfills my needs as a daily driver, weekend house project mobile and tow vehicle. I'd love it to be $10k less, but to get something new and not have the hassle of an additional vehicle for towing only, I'll end up getting one.

Andrew Collins, who writes that the less then impressive site, but reviews and writes well was less then impressed with the gas Colorado' manual gearbox and expressed that as much as he wanted to like, he'd get the automatic as there was no redeeming trait in the manual. I know the diesel would get a different gearbox and ratios, but auto only might not be as bad as feared.

Price out what a similar Silverado or F-150 would be. The Colorado/Canyon would be about HALF the price of a fullsize.

There's your googly eye smiley.

No need to, they're not for me. We've been passively shopping trucks, I'm going to wind up on the other end of the truck spectrum. I'm going to wind up in a GMT900, 2500, 4x4, 6.0l, Sierra. As much as I want a little diesel truck, it's just not practical for us and buy in on the bigger D-Max is just too much even used.
