Look at the little puddle these yuppie SUVs can't make it through:

It's not even 2 feet deep. I would plow through there in my Samurai without even lifting off the gas. And, I wouldn't do it if I had any choice, but I'm pretty sure my Toyota could carefully wade through there as well. The air intake's a good distance off the ground.
Seriously does every new car have a CAI mounted at the bottom of the bumper?

Hydro-locked motor,Porsche Cayenne = $$$$$$$$$$$$
lol my Ranchero wouldn't have had an issue with that puddle
I would have to slow down, but id hit it in my hoopty MPV.
The intake on mine pulls air from right above the top of the radiator.

Well, sheee-it, the Mighty Dak's tougher than that German creampuff. I took this out the window during our big flood of 2000:
Mind you, I limped home on three cylinders after the water reached the doors. Bunged my cat up real good too.
This reminds me of a hundred years ago I had a Dodge RamCharger. 318 automatic with open diffs at both ends. I had (and still have) zero experience off roading (offs at the track don't count). I thought one day "hey I've got this 4X4 I'm going to go play in the mud. I pulled onto the shoulder of the street to lock in the 4 wheel drive but I had stopped with a small puddle under the left rear tire and one under right front tire. That POS wouldn't move an inch. Finally some guy with a toyota work truck stopped and pulled me a foot and a half to get me unstuck. I went home, sold the truck and never went off road again.
nickel_dime:
My friend was in the process of building his Chevrolet 4x4 and he had the factory car like tires on his recently 4" lifted truck. We did go off road and got stuck at a construction site on nothing. He walked home and got his mom's station wagon and attached a strap from the street to the truck 30' away and pulled his truck off the slight slope of slippery mud. Total embarrassment .

That was only up to the center of the truck wheels - maybe a little more than a foot deep. Perhaps if they didn't try a running start creating a giant bow wave that was over their intake height... spendy mistake.
Not sissy SUV's, just really stupid SUV owners.

Yeah, they're definitely not wimpy. Drove from the Yukon to the very start of the Alaska pipeline during a blizzard in a convoy of those. Even the hybrid started at 40 below. All the water we encountered, however, was rock hard.
At 2:22, there is a Jeep on the otherside that would make it through effortlessly, but won't. Meanwhile, the tall 911 wagon is getting it's motor replaced.
All he had to do was slow down.

In my last CJ, I knew the water was getting deeper than normal on a trail once. See, I was cruising through this water crossing (pretty normal thing for a Jeeper) and the water level submerged the radio (factory location too!). I kept on going though.

I've had mine above the axles but below the door openings.

That's usually where I would keep it. But, when you are with a bunch of other Jeepers, who wants to turn back??
