I saw this one circulating facebook, my girlfriend was getting mad over it.
You all need to learn about expressions.
I solved this in my head while the page loaded just to see you gave the answer anyway. I used precious brain power, just to see I wasted it. haha
This question could be written with a million different integers to accomplish the same goal. Piss people off.
To Nick's credit... this one is written differently than the last one, and illustrates the issue differently...
But it's still dumb.
I'm sitting on a rooftop terrace in a historic Italian town with a smoke and a glass of wine; I am WAY too relaxed to start arguing about this right now. Ain't gonna hapen.

He didn't say WHICH glass of wine he was drinking. May have been the 7th or so...
If you can find anything wrong with the way I spelled "ain't gonna", by all means point it out. My PDA touchboard ate the second 'p' in "hapen", as was its right according to our pre-arranged agreement. The occasional sacrifice of a letter does wonders for its battery life.
Am I missing something here? Seems ya'll got your order of operations messed up based on the way that is written.
What you have there, in the correct order, is 1 plus 2 equals 3 times 2 which is 6 which is now the denominator dividing the numerator of 6 giving the answer 1.
Unless this is some kind of fancy emoticon?

The PEMDAS zealots will immediately replace 2(1+2) with 2(1+2) and group it as (6/2)(1+2) and claim they didn't alter the equation, failing to realize that they broke up an expression that stands alone in 2(1+2).
^^^ What he said.
In the past, I would have simplified it as
6 / (23) = 6/6 = 1
Our new PEDMAS overlords kindly explain to me here at the re-education camps that the formula should be simplified as
(6/2)(1+2) = 3 * 3 = 9.
I think that's rubbis^H^H^H^H^H^Ha much better way to do it. I welcome our new PEDMAS overlords.

Took me a minute to see the humor on your post. But now, i'm rofl'ing.
I'm glad someone appreciates it.....The ^H^H^H^H was because we're not allowed to use HTML "strike" tags....it's what shows up on the screen if you're attempting - and failing - to properly use the vi text editor.
BTW, the bit about re-education camps was hyperbole, but not much. I showed the original problem to some of the math profs upstairs, and one of them in particular has been commenting about order of operations each time she sees me....
