I'm feeling all retro for some reason.  Other than Billy Preston, can anyone recommend some funk along the lines of this?

Stevie Wonder, Bootsie Collins, Parliament, Commodores

If you want modern stuff with that funk, look up the Haggis Horns, Cooking On Three Burners, and the Mighty Imperials.

For slightly jazzier funk check out Chris Joss.

I shall be mocked for this, but there's an album called Pornosonic that is full of this stuff. Just don't mind the interstitial, umm, vocal intros.

Also, the soundtrack for the videogame Interstate 1976. Neither of these are the result of a deep devotion to the craft, but are studio musicians let free for the day.

Of course, if you're just looking for horns you want some Blood Sweat and Tears. They don't have the chunky rhythm guitar, though, so it's not really the funk.

But if you'll excuse me, I'm heading off to hear every bit of Haggis Horns I can.

While looking for something else, I came across this. Newer that the 70's and a bit of electronica but a funk vibe still.  Sorta funk roller-disco.

Lowell George was still alive then, Little Feat could get the job done.

So I'm listening to Haggis Horns  and realized - thanks to a cover - they sound like early Kool & The Gang.

Did I introduce the Haggis Horns to the class, or did others know about them?
