OK, so I reduced my cable to the bare minimum to save some money.
But there's nothing on, so I have to pay $9.99/mo for Netflix for a few good shows.
And $9.99/mo for Amazon Prime for a few more good shows.
And if you want the good videos on YouTube, $9.99/mo.
MotorTrend has some cool car videos, but you need to spend $9.99/mo for a subscription to Motor Trend TV.
Screw them all, I'll just listen to my iTunes radio stations that I spent a lot of time creating and cultivating...nope. That will be $9.99/mo.
Same with Spotify: $9.99/mo.
I'm going for a drive! What shall I listen to? Oh yeah, satellite radio for $9.99/mo.
Or maybe I will shave with my razor that I buy for $9.99/mo.
Or download some crap on my iPad, for which I pay an extra $9.99/mo.

When GRM adopts the $9.99/mo plan, I will officially give up on everything and live under a rock.

Live in Nevada? Hookers 9.99 a month Live in Colorado? Weed 9.99 a month

(For the record of it weren't for live baseball games, I'd totally cut the cord regarding cable)

I've got Netflix. If it isn't on there, I'll do without.

I pay for the GRM forum by subscribing to the magazine. I think I've to 7 or 8 years left on my sub.

Other than that, there isn't anything else on the internet worth paying for.

I kicked Comcast to the curb in favor of Direct TV and AT&t internet. I'm saving 30-40% and its locked in for 2 years.

There are plenty of things to watch on Netflix if you branch out to foreign films and documentaries. I know way too many people that refused to watch foreign films and honestly they are missing out on some really good shows/movies/documentaries

I just bought an OTA antenna. It arrived today. Plugged it in, ran a scan, and got about 30 view-able channels without even trying to orient the antenna.

Under $25, one time charge.

don't need hookers. if you could source some medicinal use weed for $9.99 a month i'm in, my knees and back would love you. i'm in the same boat with TV, baseball + basketball = cable. everything else i could catch on other sources. football is all normal tv, as is pbs and MeTV. i can get history and discovery shows on one of the other ones, but i'm tied to cable through sports. we have amazon prime because we buy so much stuff from them it's dumb not to, and netflix has lots of kid shows and topgear. crackle is free. satellite radio in vehicle is free because they didn't turn it off when it was cancelled 2 years ago.

I pay for Netflix streaming and my family just uses my account. And I pay $7.99 for streaming service only. I refuse to pay for anything on YouTube since their uploaded get paid portions of ad revenue. Hulu is also owned by Comcast, so just remember that for the anti-Comcast crowd.

Sounds exactly like my situation, minus football, I'd be fine never watching another snap on over the air broadcast or not. Amazon prime I have for the shipping, the video (and music) is a nice added bonus. And I have Netflix from back before digital streaming was the sole offering.

You realize how many TV shows and movies you can get for free at your library? Its nearly limitless if you're patient enough to let inter-library loan do the driving for you.

They recently added Talladega Nights and Full Metal Jacket. So, for now, it is on there.

An antenna is free. Have you tried it? Works with both TV and radio.

Redbox is a buck or two a movie.

Library, as mentioned by another. Usually free, sometimes a dollar.

Youtube has lots of shows for free.

PBS, BBC, National Geographic, etc all have free shows on their web pages.

You can pay if you wish to, but you don't have to.

I have cable TV here in NH for the first time in almost two decades. Mainly because it came bundled with the Internet package. Phone too, which I'll never use.

At home in PA, I have a HD antenna. Works well enough for Sunday football games, which is why I got it. Bought a new HD TV and stand last year so I didn't have to venture out in a snow storm for the Superbowl. Otherwise, it is rarely turned on. I mainly listen to a local classical music station.

The wife and I cut cable last year and haven't looked back. We have Netflix/Hulu/Prime. My monthly payment is around $30 but we paid extra for commercial free Hulu which is amazing, we also have the HD Antenna.

Paying for Netflix and Amazon Prime? Landlubber problems

companies are realizing that monthly charges have SIGNIFICANTLY higher revenues than one time charges, and human nature believes the opposite.

Just think: cell phone plan = $80/month ish. or about $1000/year. Own a cell phone for 50 years? that's $50k, not counting interest opportunity cost or inflation etc.

How many things will you spend $50k on in your life? I bet you can count them on one hand. (House, car(s), taxes, college, food, and oh yeah, internet cat pictures on the handheld).

If you asked someone to pay $1000 to be able to login to netflix whenever they wanted for the next 8-9 years, they would say "berk no". but make it $10/month, and they sign up in droves.

There is also the factor that more people can afford $10 a month than can drop $1000 one time.

That's your human nature I am talking about here. They are the same amount of money. If you can 'afford' one you can 'afford' the other. But humans tend to feel 10/month for 9 years is affordable and 1000 at once is not.

Same reason all big ticket item vendors usually also have financing available. It makes you 'feel' like you aren't in fact signing up to spend a huge amount of money (and then charging you for the favor).

Sad, but probably true. I'd say that if you can't pay a one-time $1000 payment, then you probably don't need to be spending 9.99/month on a luxury item like more TV channels. But I realize I'm in the minority with that kind of thinking.
