My sis is a large animal, mostly horse, vet in Amish country, PA. The closest I've come to horses is taking my kid to see them in the barn and pasture at my sister's stables. Funny I won't say I'm scared of horses, I just don't trust them. I think it has to do with their size.

It's all about the pants.

There's no english tack in our barn, don't worry.

Eventing is like rallying - seat of the pants stuff, and when you're jumping, the line you follow is very much like the racing line. Horses over and understeer ("through the shoulder" they call it) - and yep, you can countersteer to correct it. Braking for weight transfer is the same since a horse that is "on the forehand" is about as effective as a car with no grip behind.

Barrel racing is like autocross. :)

That'd be hilarious.

My fiancee has ridden Saddlebreds for many years. I've gone to the shows and to the barns with her since we've been together, and she's going to start showing competitively again later this year. We don't own one (yet), and our two acres of land doesn't lend itself to horse ownership. I'm hoping she'll be happy with leasing from someone at her barn, but even that is going to cost... more than a little. Argh.

Bringing our horses home rather than boarding them pays for our mortgage. Horses make heroin look cheap.
