If Pantera isn't thrown into the mix it simply isn't metal.  And I still can't figure out why Mastodon is always thrown in with "sludge" metal, its busy but not so much that I'd call it sludgy. I saw Opeth on tour with them and was really blown away so I bought a few of their albums.

Anyway, I know I will probably get kicked out for this, but one of my favorites is St. Anger by Metallica. I know it may not be to everyone's liking but it is pretty damn metal for one of the biggest metal acts ever to piss off their own fanbase with such reckless abandon. Frantic is probably one of my top ten tracks in any genre.

You mentioned LTE, have you listened to Levin Minneman Rudess or Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine & Sherinian?

No, but I'll have a look.  Thanks!

I've been listening to Metal for a very long time. I was 3 years old when I was handed Pyromania by Def Leppard on cassette, and it was all downhill from there. I like many of the different flavors, from Classic Heavy Metal to Technical Death Metal and everything in between. Here's what I've been cranking lately:

Killswitch Engage: One of my all-time faves. Been listening to them since the beginning, when an old bandmate of mine played me the 1st EP back around 2000, I was hooked. They are from here in MA, and are still the best Mass Metalcore band. Just saw them last weekend, more on that in a bit.

Elder: Intensely melodic Stoner Doom, also from MA. These guys are so good. Sooooooo good. It's like eating the slowest, sweetest cooked pulled pork, but for your ears. Fun fact: I once saw them in a burrito restaurant. I finished my burrito, had a few beers, and then they moved the tables and set up their stuff to blast everyone with sonic deliciousness for dessert. Heaven.

He Is Legend: I don't know if they even classify as Metal, more like Post Hardcore, but whatever. They have a Southern tinge to their sound, and it's full of soul and awesomeness. They will rock your socks clean off.,

Revocation: Technical, thrashy Metalcore (I think), also from MA. They do not mess around. They also have some of the most entertaining guitar solos thanks to their lead shredder David Davidson.

At The Gates: Old school Scandinavian MeloDeath, the way it should be. They have been around since the beginning of that genre, and they still rip. Newest album is a true return to form, and they have another on the way!

Soilwork: Speaking of Scandinavian MeloDeath from the beginning of time, they are also awesome. The Living Infinite double album has been getting heavy play lately.

Insomnium: Even more Scandinavian MeloDeath! These guys do it right. Their last three albums are all excellent, with all killer and no filler whatsoever.

Anubis Gate: Progressive Power Metal from the Netherlands or Denmark, I think. They have been around for a long time, but have really hit their stride with their last three releases. Great stuff.

Tribulation: Just discovered these guys over the weekend. I think they used to be straight Black Metal, but are more Blackened Death & Roll these days. And it is GREAT. There's something special about the new album.

Dokken: Talk about switching gears. They were the best Hair Metal band, bar none. George Lynch is THE MAN.

Mutoid Man: Also discovered last weekend. I am pretty sure the singer is the guy that sang for the old Mass Metalcore band Cave In after they got lame, but man, he works so much better here. They are fun to listen to.

Angel Vivaldi: Solo instrumental guitar awesomeness. Very melodic, and makes you want to pick up a guitar every time you listen.

And no mention yet of A7X!??!

Any guitar players here need to listen to the album version of "The Stage" and tell me the guitar tone in the solo is anything other than top notch.

As promised, let's talk about Killswitch Engage a bit more. I saw them over the weekend with Havok and Anthrax, both of which rule as well. But man, KSE sounded as good as I've ever heard them, and I've seen them more than any other band (at least 10x). They played stuff from the beginning to the end of their catalog, and just nailed it all. Over the years they have had two singers: Jesse Leach and Howard Jones. Jesse was the original, replaced by Howard for a few albums, and now Jesse is back. Last time I saw them, he could get though the Howard songs, but it sounded a bit off. Now, he OWNS those songs and makes them sound even better.

But really, let's talk about their guitar player Adam D.

This man is something else. I've heard about him taking shots at the bar during songs on this tour, and he did it again at the Worcester Palladium on Saturday night.

He didn't miss a single note.

BUT WAIT... THERE'S MORE!!!

He apparently has a "Pizza Tech". Yes, a guy who will bring him fresh pizza during their sets. Look on the right side of the stage.

There, you can see him being fed pizza during a guitar solo. He had a full meal during their set. LEGENDARY.

If you are looking for something that is so heavy it makes razor blades taste like candy, the answer is of course Psychostick

So. Heavy.

Half the songs they have are about me, I swear. I have a beard, I like beer, I say berkeley a lot...and their cover of danger zone is great.

Lately, I've been into metalcore/deathcore. Suicide silence is high on my list.

Also, Howard Jones (of kse fame) has a band, called light the torch. Seems to be a super group of metalcore heavy hitters. I particularly like the song "seven years alone". They did a cover of eye of the tiger I'm into.

There's also otep- who did a cover of royals (I didn't know it was a cover until yesterday- turns out is a lorde song!). All thst remains did thunder rolls- it's pretty good. There's a howl Phil does at the end of the second verse that just makes me tingle. I wish he'd do more of them on that song.

Why thank you sir!

I’ve been trying to go back through my Pandora likes to see what I wanted to check out more of.  Which I now realize wasn’t an effective method because I never did...

The bands I can listen to a million times:

  • Mastodon
  • Baroness
  • Elder
  • Clutch
  • Tool
  • The Sword
  • Amon Amarth
  • The Fall of Troy
  • Kylesa
  • Killswitch Engage

I think that’s most of them anyway.

Also I didn’t mean to rip on the genre deal, there’s nothing wrong with it in my mind.  I tried seeking bands out by that method, and just didn’t have much luck with it.

I still like the older stuff too, Iron Maiden, Sabbath, etc.

This is a great list so far!

If you want something kind of different and don’t mind older groups, there was a local metal group called Impaler. I know they have material (various sound quality) on Youtube. Another old local metal group was Dare Force. They actually played at the old Met Sports Center in Bloomington back in the 80’s and opened for some bigger bands of the day. I really liked them.

And if you want heavy but not necessarily metal (although he plays as loud and heavy as any metal band I’ve ever seen in person), try post late 80’s Dick Dale. He is still touring and although he’a slowed a bit  (he is almost 80 and has some pretty serious health issues), he can still shame a lot of younger guitar players.

Given that list, I would say check out the following albums:

The Ocean-Precambrian:

Protest the Hero- Fortress:

The Dillinger Escape Plan- Ire Works:

and less directly related to your tastes but my favorite album of all time, Between the Buried and Me-Colors:

None of those bands have ever released a bad album, so if anything there appeals to you that opens up a bunch to listen to.  You might also like Red Fang, Sleep, Torche, Gojira, Neurosis, and 3 Inches of Blood but I find those bands more hit or miss so I didn't link albums.

I grew up with (hair) metal and still likes me some loud music. I'm more of a European Symphonic Metal guy - not that I can't appreciate other genres (especially Prog) but that's a lot of what I've been listening to lately.

One of the recent discoveries is a band called Visions of Atlantis - they just had a new album out:

Plus there's always Avantasia:

Had a chance to see these Sonata Arctica live in Reno last year, together with Nightwish. Lots of good metal coming out of Finland:

Now that I have it in front of me, looking at Pandora two of the stations with the most likes are Kylesa and Elder.  Of note (for me at the time) between the two:

  • Witch
  • High on Fire
  • Pelican
  • Yob
  • Monolord
  • Black Tusk (duh, I have two of their albums on my phone)
  • Windhand
  • Kadavar
  • Bloodhorse
  • Dead Meadow

But after digging up some albums and giving them a listen, much of it left me feeling underwhelmed.  Gojira was in there somewhere, I do like them.

A couple more additions to the heavy heavy monster sound list -

Wo Fat -  heavy power trio from Dallas

Acid King - heavy power trio from San Francisco

Sleep - heavy weed smoking power trio from San Jose

I kinda wonder what Party Cannon sounds like, now.  Probably quadruple-kick blast beats and heavily distorted high speed atonal "riffs" and vocals that sounds like a clogged toilet.

I listen to the heavier stuff when I'm alone, but around the house cooking dinner with kids running around, I tend to tone it down a bit.  Here is a list of some softer family approved bands.  POD, Deftones, Evans Blue, Parabelle, Red, Chevelle, Hell Yeah, Stone Sour, Tool.  Especially like Parabelle's acustic stuff.  That being said, I'm sitting here with some Meshuggah cranking, and just finished some old school Iron Maiden.
