Discussion: ways to fight canoes

I'd like to make another suggestion: A filter that any post with "watch" and "online" in the title gets any user with a post count under 100 automatically banned.

While racking up a score for spotting canoes sounds like fun, I think the mods have more than enough on their hands already. If anything they should be the ones getting the happy hash marks for doing the sinking!

And I would would like to disagree about them being worse than ever. I was forward deployed for a few weeks, so I could not be as vigilant, but I am on here at the hours when most of you guys are asleep. I have noticed a marked decrese in their posts, and a faster response to killing them.

I would also humbly poiont out that the volume of spambot threads vs the volume of actual threads is quite low.

I realised that I had the wrong thread as soon as I posted.

There might be a few too many threads on canoeing. I saw "sink... canoes" and I fired.

Can't blame a man for trying to help, but duly noted.

I find it amusing that the canoes include a bit of current world events then throw a handful of movie links at us.

I just re-read this, and noticed how many people have reported to this thread. I've changed the topic title to include "Discussion." The plan is to have them reported over here in the "report canoes to sink" and any discussion about sinking canoes it in this thread.

Don't feel bad about which thread, though.....we'd rather have you report them than be worried about being in the wrong spot.

I think it's been mentioned elsewhere, but can we simply block IP addresses from countries known for spamming and malware? China, India, and Russia come to mind. It won't do anything for botnets/zombie PCs or any attacks via proxy server, but it would probably prevent at least some canoes from ever making it to our shores. Or are the majority of these canoes coming from the US?

Yes, and we do. But we have to be careful not to block legitimate traffic as well.

Does clicking the exclamation point have any value?

Clicking the exclamation point will collapse a post if enough people click on it. Better for inflammatory posts vs. actual canoes.
