adults in the United states avg 2.4 gallons of wine, 21.3 gallons of beer, 1.4 gallons of liquor a year. Adults in avg 25 gallons of alcoholic beverages a year vs, 21 gallons of milk a year. Among those who drink, 10 percent account for roughly half the total alcohol consumed in this country.
What do you guys think? I think their numbers are a bit off....could be wrong though. I know I come no where near that national avg. And my wife says she nearly matches the amount of alcohol with milk in her drinks.

According to my maths, 21.3 gallons of beer works out to about 4 cans/week. But only 12 bottles of wine/year, (~ 1 glass/week). That seems like not enough wine.
Someone is handling my share of milk, wine and liquor then. I havent had a glass of milk since around 1992. I can't get my mind around consuming a glass of dead white blood cells. Liquor? Not in a decade. Beer however. I can easily see a lot more than that.
I don't drink wine, hardly drink liquor and I know I drink way more milk than beer. That's not saying I don't drink beer, but just not as much as milk.
Some where in Kansas is an entire city with no beer.
The sale of those commodities is well documented, so finding the number is easy enough. Same with the population. So there's really no reason to think they are off.
Remember, averages do not reflect what most people do. It's an average of what most people do. Like the 1.7 children per family average (or whatever the number is currently). There isn't a single family that reflects that average, having a fraction of a child.
I'm quite positive I drink more beer than milk. Probably more milk than liquor though.
I wonder if I'm part of the 10%?
I am well below the average. I have not had a glass of wine in a couple years, I have a gin and tonic about 2-3 times a week, and probably a couple beers a month, unless I find a really good brew, then I can breeze a sixer in a week.
oh, and I probably drink a gallon of milk every week and a half...

I live in Wisconsin, I drink more of all of those than the national average.

That'd be me on the milk front. I bet I power through 3 gallons a week.
Your share of the liquor is being handled by a guy I flew with in Texas. Sumbitch drained a handle of Maker's a week, easy.

I'm okay with this. I've become accustomed to being above average.

I'm making up for all you that dont drink liquor.
And I'm making up for all of you that don't drink beer.
Osterkraut is taking care of my milk. Haven't had a glass in over 40 years. We don't even buy milk.
I think maybe I'm berkeleying up the average on the liquor thing.
I drink half a gallon of milk (in my cereal) a week. I gave up on beer 20 years ago. and I go through 2 bottles of wine a year..
I am WAY under the curve

Heh, that's me too. I quit drinkin... 5-10 years ago (not on the wagon, just really don't like hangovers, and two beers was enough to do me dirty). I will burn through a gallon of milk in a week- if I remember to buy it. It might be a month or two before I actually go get some. Though technically... never a "glass" as I generally drink it straight from the jug.
Don't forget that college students count in these numbers as well
They don't worry me. As Luke pointed out, it doesn't take much regular consumption in moderation to pile up over a year. As for me, I'm counting for zero on the alcoholic stuff and probably about average on milk, but way ahead of the curve for OJ.
The stat that scares me is the average time spent watching TV. The average US household has a TV playing for 5 hours a day according to Nielsen. That's not cumulative over a year!

Also, remember it is an Average.
I know (and have known) some people who drink 12+ cans a DAY!
College students for the win. Right now I have a case of Rickard's, four bottles of bourbon, two bottles of vodka, two bottles of tequila, two bottles of Irish whiskey, a bottle of rum, and a bottle of scotch. I tend to slowly collect liquor.

The fact you're COLLECTING liquor means you're a pretty sorry college student! Empty bottles piled in a corner, now THAT'S college!
