Mama handles all the bills and I don’t ask questions. However, I just got a text from AT&T saying our bill is due in the amount of $220 for our 2 iphone 6s’s. Confirmed with wife that this is the “normal” bill (no late fees or anything.)
Is this “typical” for smart phones or are we paying way too much?

We have AT&T and that's our approximate bill for 3 lines with 8(?) gigs of shared data and 3 iPhone 6s lease payments included. Maybe slightly less.
[edit] That is with an employer program discount, as noted below.
I pay 163 with AT&T for unlimited data (grandfathered plans), about 600 minutes and two iphones.
We do get a 20% discount through my employer, which helps.
I pay $120 a month, unlimited everything for 5 phones. Im with sprint.
We have 2 not-iphones and our bill usually ranges from ~$50-70, depending on data usage.
We'll be splitting the plan soon and I'll go back to paying $25-33 for my service.
I have MCS Metro, with an iphone 6 and I pay $50 a month. I'm not sure of the data, but it's way more than I ever use.
methinks you should shop around a bit.....

We’re at $160/month for 3 lines, including payment for my iPhone. We were around $220/mo for 4 lines + 2 phones. That might have been before we dropped the unlimited data though.
Two lines and how much data?
I was paying 180 a month for unlimited data and minutes from Verizon before I switched.
Current carrier is typically right at 60 dollars a month for 2 lines (we have pay as you use data) and maxes out at 80 dollars a single line or 135 dollars max for 2 lines no matter how much data you use. They don't support iPhones though.
You might be still paying for the iPhone 6 in your cell bill if you got it from the phone company direct and paying for it monthly until it’s paid for.
I've done Republic Wireless, would recommend it if you don't use a ton of data. Even medium use is probably a decent deal there. (Must purchase or have compatible phone, no iPhones.)
Currently on Project Fi from Google, similar to Republic Wireless, but overall a bit more expensive. (Must purchase or have compatible phone, no iPhones.)
About to switch to T-Mobile, recommended by a friend. Got an iPhone 7 for cheap, so once I fix the screen I'm going to switch to T-Mobile, right now there is a 10gb plan for $50/month. Not a big iPhone guy, but I am annoyed with my Nexus 6p and got this one cheap.
I'll chime in for project fi again. 3 networks instead of one, unlimited calls and texts, pay as you go data, and I'm averaging $50/month which includes my $30 phone and insurance payment.

I hope that $220 includes a substantial payment toward the phones, becuase it seems extremely high for service. I am on T-mobil and bought my phones up front (currently iPhone 5s), so the service on two phone lines with data is a flat $95 a month.
We use Cricket, which I believe is associated with Sprint. Two phones (don't ask me what brand) and unlimited data, text and talk for $80/month. We bought the phones outright for less than $150 each. My wife thinks they currently have a plan available with four phones for $100/month.
$220 seems a lot. I pay $135-$145 for three lines with T-Mobile, for unlimited data/calls/texts. And that's with the $25/month International calling plan/unlimited hotspot activated.
Keep in mind that there is no phone lease included in the above, I tend to pay for phones outright.
We have 2 iPhones on our plan, 1GB shared plan. $73 per month. We own the phones, the plan does get throttled past the 1GB but no extra charges. The throttled speed is still faster than our DSL at home so no probs there.
I can't imagine paying that much for cell phones.
This is a huge reminder of why I'm on a pre-pay plan instead of a monthly deal. I pay $45 with 6GB of data on AT&T; to get the same on a monthly plan would cost me almost $80.

Exactly what I use, bought iPhone new from Walmart for $150. Wife’s cost only $35 since she’s at home on WiFi

This. Ours were ~60/month in 2016. I think you pay them off over 18-24 months now.
Project Fi for both of us. Bills are usually in the $25-30 per month, each. Before Fi, I was paying more per month for service for a flip phone.

Ting here. Varies from $20 to $80 a month for one line. I own my iPhone6 outright, I think I paid $300 for it a while back.
Tmobile, right around $100 a month for 2 phones unlimited data. No contract can switch plans anytime with no penalty (like if they come out with a new plan that saves you a few bucks)
I think if you start adding more lines the rate per phone may get a little better with some of their other plan options.
For sixty something I have unlimited wifi with AT&T then twenty something with Republic so under a hundred for one person.
Project Fi
Purchased my Pixel 2 outright (although they now allow you to finance a phone, which is part of the reason your AT&T bill is so high), using WiFi at home, work, and whenever available, my phone bill hovers around $27/month.

$200+ for 2 users? iPhone data is a hellofa drug. How much of that is paying for phones, and how long until they are paid off and that (hopefully) drops off? How much of that is for cell data, and how much cell data are you paying for each month? How much cell data are you actually using each month, and how much of your cell data usage occurs when there is also wi-fi available?
In my personal and biased opinion, yes you're paying way too much for both the phones and the service. Of course, you're far from alone on that.
Then again, I'm also a cheap bastard with a lower-mid range but still more-than-adequate $170 phone (Moto G5+) that nobody (not even me) can honestly tell isn't higher end than it is and a $25/mo cell bill (Republic), who comfortably uses less than (1/2 of the) 1G/mo cell data I pay for and roughly 10G/mo of (no-additional-cost and unlimited) wi-fi data. My wife is on the same plan. While she is less conscious of her wi-fi data usage than I am, she isn't a heavy data user, and so still effortlessly stays under the 1G cell data soft-limit. Everybody is different, but for us there is no phone or service that is enough (~250% by cost) better to warrant us paying an additional $1,850 per year.
