Hells Yeah!

I don't know. Having been involved with a '74 Hornet Sportabout with a straight 6, I really don't understand the love for these things. That was the worst POS I've ever had to take care of. And it had rust holes everywhere.
Only thing that tempers my want for an SX/4 is knowing what lives under the hood: the Iron Duke.
I'll take one with a 4.0 HO, though.

Not all of them! Just as many were built with either the 232 or 258 I-6's, which are obviously mix-and-matchable with the 4.0. I've seen some V8 conversions as well (including an AWD 401 SX/4! ) but I don't know if you could ever get a 304 V8 one factory or not.
I don't think you could get the V8 with the 4x4 version.. But the last of the AMX cars.... 78-79... (the body went to 83) could be had with a V8...
I remember looking at one when i was trying to spend my lawn mowing money on my first car.. Dad talked me out of it.. probably for the best.. but yeah...
Someday...

One of these has a cameo appearance in a BMW film with a 2002 cruising around california.

There were a few Concords/Spirits built in 79 that had 304's, but very few. 80 till death, they were all 258's. The Iron Duke was an option in the Spirit, but I never saw one in a Concord. I'm pretty confident the only AWD engine was the 258, but all this is based off working in an AMC dealership in 80-81, so the memory is a bit foggy.
Late Gremlins/early Spirits had a VW motor as the 4 cylinder option- maybe the Audi 100 motor?...

There were definitely 304 Concords. I had 78 Wagon just last year . The Spirit AMX could come with them as well. Not sure about the year cut-off, you are probably right.
That's what Mad Max would have driven had he been from Minnesota. Granted, his would have 4 pipes sticking out each side, and a massive V8 under the hood with an equally massive blower punched through the hood.

I hate you. Now I have to build that. MiniMax would be the world's coolest rallycross car!
I found a sx4 locally for $700. If I didn't know the wife would kill me it would become a fun rallyx car.
