It is disgusting that we allow this to happen. Here is a long list of articles dealing with the government robbing people.

medical marijuana businesses look like ripe picking. They have a ton of cash, federal laws still in effect...
New Yorker article about regular people who were robbed with no recourse and it's perfectly legal.
These are all regular people who were basically shaken down for whatever they had. And it isn't even unusual. Scary.

As if this is anything new. Had a traffic ticket in the last 30 years. They aren't about the law or safety. $$$$
I always pictured the day I finally got to live in a Banana Republic I would be the guy riding around in the jeep with the machine guns, not the one getting fleeced by the govt. And I thought it would be more tropical paradise and less stale urine scented.

We've always hated you, we were just really nice about it.
Travel advisory to Canadians. Hard to believe.
Avoid long chats if you’re pulled over. Answer questions politely and concisely, then persistently ask if you are free to go. Don’t leave litter on the vehicle floor, especially energy drink cans. Don’t use air or breath fresheners; they could be interpreted as an attempt to mask the smell of drugs. Don’t be too talkative. Don’t be too quiet. Try not to wear expensive designer clothes. Don’t have tinted windows. And for heaven’s sake, don’t consent to a search if you are carrying a big roll of legitimate cash.
Some things to remember :
A cornerstone of Desert Snow’s instruction rests upon two 1996 U.S. Supreme Court decisions that bolstered aggressive highway patrolling. One decision affirmed the police practice of using minor traffic infractions as pretexts to stop drivers. The other permits officers to seek consent for searches without alerting the drivers that they can refuse and leave at any time.
“Police Officers Are Not Required To Inform A Motorist At The End Of A Traffic Stop That He Or She Is ‘Free To Go’ Before Seeking Permission to Search The Motorist’s Car,” the training material says.
Desert Snow urges police to work toward what are known as a “consensual encounters” — beginning with asking drivers whether they mind chatting after a warning ticket has been issued. The consensual chat gives police more time to look for indicators and mitigates later questions in court about unreasonably long traffic stops.
I am a clean cut and law abiding citizen, and definitely not a smuggler, but I feel a strong urge to keep a laminated copy of the bill of rights with me at all times these days.
I have no empathy for drug smugglers, I don't care if LEOs confiscate their money, but its easy to see this practice leading to outright corruption in no time flat.

If the Architects of the Constitution came back today, they might think that the Red Coats were back in charge

I'm sorry but that is Oceania. Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.

If I carry $200 but all in ones will they assume my GF is a stripper and let me off with passes to the local hooter hut?
I'm glad to see more people are paying attention to this now. Here's to hoping corrupt police and bureaucrats get the punishment they deserve.
