A record-breaking Burmese python — as long as a giraffe is tall — caught in Florida
I will admit that one of the titles does say 19 foot long, but I digress.

Hey, I still hear references to things on the news being the size/weight of a "Volkswagen Bug".
I am a bit uncertain when I hear that if they are referring to the old or newer (but still out of production) Bug. Similar size, but wildly different weights.

There are two kinds of countries on Earth. Those that use the metric system, and those who have put men on the moon.
Admittedly, if you put "580 cm snake found!", No one would have a good mental picture of how long that is.
some may not even know if 580cm is an exceptionally large snake or an exceptionally small one.

True... but more than a few would understand 5.8 meters long.

I've eaten python. In terms of texture it's like eating string cheese that's still in the plastic. In terms of flavor...it's not worth getting past the texture.

So is that why the guy wanted to blow up NIST? I mean, I can totally understand doing it to ISO, and SAE probably deserves it for AS9102, but NIST? [this is a joke, I am not advocating for any acts of terrorism].
[Also, yes, flounder warning, but FFS (er, FBS?) do we really need another "messed-up UOM" thread?]
[And I agree with Ian F, cm should be deprecated and people should use either m or mm]

...And then promptly proceed to convert that into feet, to conceptually understand what that means.

Oh My Gahd, Beccky! I just did that!
Measurement aside, I'm curious to know how the python hunters dispatch their prey. Do they use something like a bang stick? In all the pictures of this particular snake, I haven't seen any obvious wounds.

You SHUT your mouth when you're talking to me!
(That's a Wedding Crashers reference for anyone who doesn't know.)
Some people are not good at visualizing distances, so the author figured he'd compare the snake to something that most people are familiar with. Because almost everyone keeps giraffes as pets, comparing the snake's length to the height of a giraffe was a no-brainer. Literally.
In reply to dyintorace :
Ive heard there is a standard way that it is supposed to be done, but lots of gunshots is probably best.
edit: i looked it up.

render it unconscious by wackin it in the head, then use a pokin stick and scramble its brain.
In reply to David S. Wallens :
Can you translate that to Florida speak? How many pythons big is the large/small boulder?
In reply to Robbie (Forum Supporter) :
5.8 meter would be more sensible. At least, I know it's about 6 yards and 1 foot.
Jerusalem post is always good for weird units of measurement. Last week or the week before they used 3500 Whoppers to describe one. Though the headline didn't specify burger king or candy store Whopper.
Still, I've got 20chickens and they're 13 different sizes so not very helpful either.

Maybe it's because I watch so much content from Europe that I can "think" in meters if I need to. Millimeters is sometimes easier to visualize than inch fractions.
Kg vs. lbs is still tough for me.
Liters is slightly easier since so much of the equipment I deal with at work is in liters.
