Nobody would dare walk in barefoot in my yard! I spent time this spring and summer pulling Tumble Weeds out and low and behold.... I am thinking Propane Weed Burner. No harsh chemical just burner baby burn! I pulled the big ones out and picked up the seeds. (Leather gloves worn) but there are a lot of little ones left. I pulled a few last year but alot more rain here than last year.
these will stick in your car tires for a ride..

I remember reading about those in a book called Currahee- which was about a man who joined the paratroopers in WWII. The field they landed in had these all over the field. Lot of small injuries.
(and if you are curious about Currahee- it pre-dated Band of Brothers by quite a few years (~25)- but after BoB came out, then the other two books he wrote notes of his war experience war were published.

Not relevant to the OP's topic, but relevant to alfadriver's post. Alfadriver, you piqued my interest, so I went on Amazon and bought the trilogy. Annie and I are going on vacation to Palm Springs next week, and this will be my reading material. I can't wait to start:

Going on that tangent- we visited the national cemetery near us in Holly, MI, and I found his grave site- he passed not too many years ago. The books are pretty addictive to read over again. I think I've read Currahee 5 or 6 times.
I very much regret not reaching out to him to meet him. I knew he was still in this area, and on his website he mentioned going to the VA here in Ann Arbor.

Shoot - I looked those books up - now I want to read them.
They are call goat's head weed. They are a invasive plant from Eurasia and Africa.
Oh. I can play. Tumbleweeds are a menace, goatsheads are worse. The roses that grow around here look like some caricature of roses. More thorns than stem. The worst though are mesquite trees. Pretty hearty, and strong, but if you ever see a branch down, don't run it over. Those thorns will pop a tire. Makes good chips for smoking meat though.

Seems to me we had a thread a few years ago where a member of The Hive was going to go all medieval on a patch of plants on his property using salt--literally "salting the ground". The conventional wisdom was that a mixture of Dawn dishwashing liquid, salt and vinegar in a sprayer was the "organic" method of killing unwanted plants without resorting to Chemical Warfare (aka Roundup). I haven't used it myself very much but reports are that it does work...
Giant Hogweed has been moving in on the west coast.
That stuff is horrible, you can't even use fire to kill it.
I have many less-than-fond memories of pulling those out of my bicycle tires and feet growing up. We called 'em puncture vines for obvious reasons.

Holly cow! Those look more menacing that what I have. I am buying the torch and a propane tank and burn the area. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it dries up a bit more here so it will work. 50000 btu should do it. I have tried the salt,soap,vinegar. That does not work here. The weeds are tough, they just laughed and kept growing.
