I'm trying to find a more accessible/easier to read layout for our work schedule. We've recently moved to a team format with seven teams working shift work for about eight different positions.
The issue is how to create a visible schedule that shows what team is on what shift, who is on which teams (to account for swaps, vacations, etc.) and so forth. Any ideas? I'll try to post a screen shot of what we have now if I'm able, the new site is horribly slow from work.
Post up what you have now and I will see what I can come up with.
Questions: Does it need to be printable? Also, is Excel a format you can work with, and if so which version? Are you looking for a weekly layout or monthly? How many shifts per day?

This is what I have now. It would help if it was printable. A weekly layout would be best as we rotate on a (mostly) weekly basis. There are three shifts during the week - staffed by two teams - and two on the weekends (staffed by one team - we go to 12's to maximize weekends). We use Excel and Access 2010 and the schedules are posted on an internal SharePoint site. If there is anything that can be done more difficultly, my company will find it.

Does each team member need the ability to view all the other team's/member's schedules, or just their own?
Everything needs to be visible. We may rely on other teams to cover vacation and outages.

Anybody got any insight? Just want to throw out your 2 cents?
I'll be honest - you're screen shots are too small for me to see 100% what's going on. But based on your description and what I can see, it seems like there's too much data you're trying to view at once. I'm not sure that shuffling things around is going to make it that much better. It's like trying to view 3-dimensional data in a 2-dimensional space.
IMO the best way to clean this up is to split it apart:
1.) Show a single view for each week that only has the team assignments - like your second image above, but only for a single week.
2.) Show each team schedule across a given period(2-months, like the example above?), but only for 1-team per page.
3.) Show a page for each individual, showing what team they're working on each day, and what the schedule is for that day. You could probably do this for the full 2-months.
Ideally, this is where you need something users can access and filter from their computer(even better if it's web-based so they can access it from home), that allows them to filter/sort and choose how they want to view the schedule. If they don't care who they're working with, they don't have to see any info for other people - they just know what team they're on that day, and what time they have to work. If they're concerned about what other teams they'll be working with on a given day, or who they're stuck working with, they can view all teams or just other individuals, etc.
