Any GRMers from NYC

I am looking at a job opportunity for a project in the Jersey City / NYC area and maybe moving there for about a year and a half (maybe longer).

Any one on this board live in NYC or lived there previously that can give me some advise. I will be moving from the Ohio countryside to the Jersey City area if things work out. Any recommendations for where to live, etc? The office I would go to has a parking garage but should I even bring my car?

I stay at a hotel in Jersey City when working lower Manhattan. Here is the nut of it - the place is a ghost town after business closes.

The closer you can get to the water - the better. I've walked all over and jogged the pier well after I'd have thought was safe and it was really fine. When you get back a mile from the river it gets a bit ugly.

The River Horse has good food/beer and is a classy joint. The dive bars 3 blocks off the water have music, jersey girls and locals so, depending on what floats your boat - it's all there. The Village is one stop away - so is Wall St and $2 gets you to mid-town. Hoboken is 2 miles north and has about 3 million bars per square foot with a variety of food, drugs, whores and nice shops.

In that area you can make two choices:

1) Go for city living with no car 2) Live further out with a car

I lived in Bloomfield, NJ (exit 151 off the Garden State Parkway) for a year and a half out of college while I was working in the city. I used NJ transit a lot, and if I had to do it over again, I would have ditched the car and lived in the city. The money you'll save on the car/car insurance/parking will let you move into the city. Back when I was there, car rentals were impossible for the under 25 crowd, but now with things like zipcar, finding a car if you need one is much easier.

Hoboken is a good compromise if you don't want to be in NYC, but want to be close to it.

I'll echo GPS' comments about Jersey City and extend it to the Financial District in Manhattan, as well. Even Tribeca can get really quiet late at night.

If you can find a hotel to stay in for the first couple of weeks you're there, it might make sense to start work, meet some people, and get their advice on where to live. You might be able to share a larger apartment with someone as opposed to renting a studio or small 1 bedroom. Plus, you'd have a built-in social life, which can help if you're moving to NYC and don't know anyone there.

If you're working downtown look for places in Jersey close to the Path train or a ferry to downtown. Some parts of Brooklyn aren't to bad either, again try to stay near a subway to make the commute easy. I wouldn't look much further than that. I'm working by Battery Park next week and as much as I like it down there I am not looking forward to the commute. I live about 80 miles north of Manhattan and take the train in most days so I can have some property but if I was only here short term or was not married I would probably live alot closer.
