Anybody shoot competitively?

I think JG had a thread way back about competitive pistol shooting. Any one else shoot IPSC, Steel Challenge, IDPA, etc.? I've been thinking about it but wondered about others experiences.

I still have all my stuff. XD40 for IPSC Production and a custom Para .40 Open race gun. I gotta get out and shoot again soon. That E36 M3's fun.

IDPA is not really my speed. Too structured. I like the IPSC approach of just running around and shooting. A friend of mine that owned a gun shop and entered the Challenge a few years ago has long harbored a fantasy of somehow combining and IPSC style event with an autocross. Shooting out of a moving car is definitely on my bucket list. jg

I'd love to shoot out of a car, just to see how hard it would actually be. I have no idea how you would do it (sort of) safely...

I want to do a Rally X biathlon where you drive a lap and then have to get out and shoot at a target. That would be berkeleying awesome.

I LOVE this idea. Any chance we can add this as an event at the challenge?

Have two classes 2wd/small caliber and 4wd/large caliber hehe.

I've got a friend who lives locally who is a member of the Olympic Rifle Team.

But I don't know squat.

I think the sport you are referring to is called "drive by's" and is quite popular in some of the less desirable neighbour hoods.

That shows up on those World's Wildest Videos shows all the time - a bunch of kids filming themselves driving around shooting pedestrians with paintball guns. Makes for great evidence when they get arrested.

I like target shooting, but I never figured out this shooting at other people for fun thing.

When I was much younger ~10 years ago my friends and I drove around with paintball guns and shot at eachother's cars. We never shot any people, but occasionally would get a shot in the other car's window. It was in no way safe even though we were out in the country, but it was a lot of fun.

I think autox with target shooting paintballs could be good. Just asses a 2 second penalty for any missed targets.

Why does this come to mind when you talk about combining The Challenge and a shooting competition...

I used to shoot smallbore NRA Hunter Pistol Metallic Silouette. You know, Chickens, Pigs, Turkeys, Rams at 40M to 100 yards standing with a handgun. I used a Contender with a match bbl for Iron Site (AAA) and a 24X scope with a Taco hold for Any Site (AA). My wife shot with a Hi Standard Trophy. Kinda quit 2 years ago. It's 60 miles one way to the match, among other issues.

I've shot High Power Rifle Prone a few times. I built a rifle for it (Mauser 98, 30-06 Montana Rifleman bbl that tapers down to 1", Palma rear sight, Tompkins globe front, rail, hand stop, etc. The sights cost more than the rest of the gun did), got a Champion's Choice spotting scope (amazing), then moved and the nearest match is 3 hours drive one way instead of 15 minutes. I only have about 50 yards of open space to shoot on my property, and that rifle won't even get warmed up at that range. I used to get about 3" groups at 200 yards off the bench with the iron sights, and that was before i had it bedded and really worked up a good load for it.

Not really what you are talking about, but I did some 5-stand before discovering cars.

Mostly a rifleman here, but I shot in a Wednesday night pistol league (Bullseye) while as a teenager - my, how times have changed - then got into what we used to call "Combat" shooting with IPSC while in college. That made qualification with M1911's in the Army a piece of cake. Somewhere along the line I shot some country-boy metallic silhouette (Straight-wall pistol cartridges only, shot standing, out to 100 yards). With rifles, I shot smallbore bullseye in high school and college ROTC, then got into high power (on my own dime) while in the Army. Family and money have reduced my shooting quite a bit, but the bug is still there. There's something about rapid fire with a bolt gun that pleases me.

I was on my Army Jr. ROTC's marksmanship team for a year. We used Daisy air-powered pellet rifles. It was pretty fun, even though they weren't real guns and I was only middling in my accuracy. One of the nifty things about it was that if you joined the military, the marksmanship badge would go with you, and if your status changed (i.e. you went from Marksman in JROTC to Expert in the Army), the "Small-Bore Rifle" tag for the pellet rifles went with it.

My friend used to coach the Navy pistol team and run the Navy range in Anapolis, I think. He has a President's 100 ribbon. He retired out, got an MBA and is in biddness world now doing forecasting.

I shot the IDPA Nats a few years ago.

Wish I had money and I'd still be shooting... not a good time to be using a bullet hose. One of these years I have to shoot the Bianchi Cup. Can't say I lived in Columbia for almost 15 years and didn't...

I've only shot competitively a few times.

But, I did build a 38 foot rimfire range in my basement when my shooting habit got to be too expensive.

What about the game twisted metal? What about something like that with paintball machine gns on the cars?
