I just bought my tickets this morning, and I'm freakin' excited. http://gwarbq.com/
Welcome to gorgeous Varina VA when you're at Hadad's Lake. That place is...distinctive. Pics of Hadad's at their website.
I can't believe Body Count is playing. I haven't heard them since '92.
If you want any suggestions about what to do in RVA, just ask. I can point you to some great stuff. If you like art the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is incredible and free. If you're a Civil War buff, there's no finer city for seeing that stuff.
I probably won't have much time for anything else, but I appreciate the offer! I'll probably be getting in around 11pm Friday and leaving first thing Sunday morning.
Are you camping at Hadad's or staying somewhere in the city? Hell, it would probably be as close to stay at one of the airport hotels if you're flying in.

Body Count (Like Ice Cube) is on the bill. I don't know how they pulled that off.

You mean Ice T as in law and orders detective Tutuola, It is amazing, but i heard something a few years ago about him doing a few selected rap dates and a few selected rock dates with Bodycount each year but I didnt know he still did them

I haven't booked my hotel yet. I'm driving in, but I still want to stay as close as possible to the venue, because I'm sure there's going to be a spill-over of craziness once the show is over. I highly doubt I'll be ready for bed at 11pm after seeing GWAR again (probably for the last time). I think there's an after party that's already sold out, so I'm sure I won't be the only one that's still ready to party after the show.

I'm not sure what's planned for an after party but the area where Hadad's is located is in the country. You're at least 15 - 20 mins from any hotel options. The closest place to 'party' would be in Shockoe Bottom if you're looking for bars. That's about 10 mins away via Rt 5. I can't offer suggestions for good bars in Shockoe as I don't go there for drinks or hanging out. You might want to go farther to The Fan for different bars. I take that back, Capital Ale House may have a good scene still going on in downtown Richmond. Although if you stop there you're a stone's throw away from VCU and the places it feeds every weekend.
If you're the adventurous sort your best bet for accomodations may be using AirBnB. I see plenty of places for less than $75 a night for 8/16 - 8/17. Hotels downtown are going to run right around $100/night. Hotels near the airport, which are really just near the airport - nothing else, will run about the same.
So it looks like all the host hotels are near the airport, and all about $100 a night. The after party show is at Bandito’s Burrito Lounge on Patterson, which looks to be in between downtown and the west end? It looks like priceline has some pretty good deals on hotels in both areas ($50-$80), so if I was looking for some decent, laid back bars within walking distance, which area would you suggest?
Bandito's is up on the edge of the "fan" neighborhood. Good place known for pretty eclectic music scene.
Within walking distance of what? The venue? A hotel? I can say the hotels near the airport will not have a bar in walking distance. Other locations in the city will most likely have a decent watering hole in walking distance. I just need a location to search around to help ya out.

Sorry, I still haven't booked my hotel, and was trying to figure out what area has the best laid back nightlife within walking distance, and if I should look for something near Bandito's.
I'm fine with driving to and from Hadad's, but once I'm back from there I'd prefer to stay within walking distance of the hotel and still have options.
Got it.
Airport hotels have already been addressed. I'm not saying you can't find a beer but those are very suburban areas. You'll have to drive or taxi somewhere. Richmond isn't a taxi friendly town so that may not be a very good option.
If you take Rt 5 north from Hadad's you'll end up in the city pretty quick. Any of the hotels there will have something nearby. The Marriott on Broad will have Pasture, Rappahanock, among others within in hoofing distance. If you stay at the Omni you're smack dab in the middle of one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city and can take advantage of bars in Shockoe Bottom. That has it all from high end like Tobacco Company to more work-a-day joints like City Dogs. City Dogs would be my choice. Good beer selection and a hot dog from each region of the U.S. You'll walk by a bar every few seconds to get there too.
Unfortunately there aren't any hotels in The Fan. That's bar central, especially Robinson St and parts of Main St past VCU. If you don't mind a taxi ride, or maybe even uber, you can get to those bars pretty easy from the downtown hotels I already mentioned. If you go to Robinson I recommend Mac's Whiskey Bar. Ask Mac for a suggestion and if he's not hitting on a patron he'll make some good suggestions. Otherwise don't bug the guy! If you're on Main I'd try drinks, not food, at Sticky Rice. If you want good food try Postbellum or Bellytimber. You can also taxi out to Cary Town. If you're there I'd recommend dinner at just about any asian place along that way along with drinks at New York Deli.

Dude, everybody and their berkeleying brother is playing this year, I guess to "pay their respects" or whatever.
